Short answer is YES!
If you live on indian reservation or puerto rico where you don't have engine hoist nor cherry picker, you can remove all the parts surrounding the engine block and remove/install the crankshaft, it will be very time consuming but it could be done, by the time you got the block bare then two people can pull it out of the bay with some rope and wood stick.
All you need is 4x2 wood with some rope or chain accross the fenders holding the engine block upNo, not possible unless you had an engine lift holding up the engine, since the subframe would need to be dropped

Hey I am in the process of doing this but I have a couple questions.
Can I order the S50 chip from TMS and use that?
And is it absolutely necessary to use the M54 trays if I am running the M54 cam, or can the M50 tray be used?
I don't think the M54 cam will work with the M50 tray, but not sure.
I also want to know about the TMSOriginally Posted by nates89
PM for custom chip for this stroker, don't waste money on expensive chips.
You must use 1996+ cam tray for the M54 intake cam, the M50 tray can be made to work with dremel tool but not worth it. You should get 1996+ both cam trays with lifters anyway they are lighter and will help at high revs.
Here is another link to a person that did dual vanos installation on M5+ head: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1787170

no dyno yet?
Kool build, but it's not really worth it unless you can get the parts cheaper than an s50/2 crank/pistons.
That's why it is a budget build. I bought 2 complete m54b30 for 250.00 a piece
in my area. I will sell all the parts I don't need and probably make money. I am slowly building an m50 stroker. This thread has given the confidence to try it out. I am working on the m54 cam swap next.
Thanks to the OP.
quick questions.
what car does the m54 come out of?
is the m54 Intake cam bigger then the s52 intake cam?
does the m52 crank have less stroke than the m54 crank?
what's you're opinion on doing this with an obd-2 car? etc: my 97 328is that's going to be boosted here shortly.
Transmission wise do you just reuse the the M50 5-speed?
LOL! Why not try using google? Why so lazy?
NOis the m54 Intake cam bigger then the s52 intake cam?
depends what M54 crank, M54 engine comes in different strokes.does the m52 crank have less stroke than the m54 crank?
With the questions that you are asking I don't think you are mechanicly inclined to even do a spark plug change yet alone turbo a carwhat's you're opinion on doing this with an obd-2 car? etc: my 97 328is that's going to be boosted here shortly.

If you're boosting I would use either stock or specific turbo cams. More lift doesn't always mean more power.Originally Posted by whoshaunq

if any?

We're currently getting all the parts together to upgrade our 1996 328i. We'll be using an M54B30 crank and pistons as well as S50 cams. We'll actually start the project in May. We hope to be in the 250 hp range when finished. So far we have $550 in the crank, pistons and cams. If we can get around $250 for the old 328i components the net cost won't be too bad. We hope to do it for around a $1000. Will keep everyone posted.
250 hp for a NA engine would be great

for Zach, Everett, and Lilly
Is it possible to this with a 403 DME?
Nice build .. I'll do this when I buy a another car and track my 92.. Will this be good on boost?
Depends on the block/engine management you useOriginally Posted by JaeBeEmVee

could you throw the m54 crank in an s50b30 , it has about 3mm more stroke than the s50 crank, if it all fit you could get more torque? but what pistons and rods would work... sounds like a project!

Crank would work, yeah, but the bore is 3mm more on the S50 than the ones used in the non-m engines. You may be able to use the 330 rods, but the pistons wouldn't fit. Too small.

Connecting rods are the same part number and lenght on all 2.8L 3.0L 3.2L BMW engines 1996 to 2006, they are all 135mm lenght.
330 M54 crankshaft is exacly the same as M3 S52 crankshaft
M54B30 crankshaft is the same as S52B32, rod lenght is the same on your 95 m3 as M54B30, You can use your S50 crankshaft and rods and put on M52 2.8L pistons into M50 block and that is called 2.9L high compression stroker.could you throw the m54 crank in an s50b30 , it has about 3mm more stroke than the s50 crank, if it all fit you could get more torque? but what pistons and rods would work... sounds like a project!
