some people have asked me about self made door cards. so ill quickly show ya how the rear was done.
this was done on my daily bimmer..
things you need
3mm MDF board
black vinyl
adhesive glue
jig saw
cutting out the shape of the door card
test fitting the door card. mark out what needs to be trimmed off.
i used the original door card mount for the new door card.
checking the fitment on the side. still needs to be trimed so it sits flush.
the rear door cards are two pice. made things easy compered to the frount one pice door cards.
when i was happy with the fitment i went and did the black vinyl.
when you glue the vinyl. make sure you have an even amount of glue on both surfaces. dont go over board with the glue.
when you stick the vinel on, fold over the edges and glue down.
with the left over flaps that stick up, squeeze them together
and then cut them off.
let the glue dry,
i dont have pics of the rear cards on but will post some up later.
here is the front ones done.
the front was harder to do. the door handels had to be raised out to line up with the door cards, the door handle used to pull the door shut needed to be bolted to a metel plate, that bolts to the door its self. all the door cards are very easy to remove.
the glue i used was cheap crap so the top of the front cards have small bubbles as you can see in the pic.
all this cost less that $100. the door cards are very strong and light. but i did this because the original door cards were shot to hell and back so i needed a cheap alternative.
Nice work. Not something I would do on a daily, but for a track slack or something, that would be usefull.

Those would be great in track cars. You should keep template of your design so you can make more in case you get offers.
i still have the templates, but i will never make these door cards to sell.
Honestly, you could make a little profit off of this. I know some rat rodders around here that love this kind of look..lol. Same with the wannabe "ricer racers". The whole "oh man, it saves me 5 ounces, must make my quarter mile seconds faster!" attitude is in full effect with them. HahaOriginally Posted by DailyE36

because they're his and indue. That's why not
Awesome, nice writeup!
Wow, very nice job man. It's not my kind of look, but I respect all of the work put into these. This might also encourage even more radical custom door panels in the future. Very nice.
These would be great as replacements on an e30. They look very similar

they look good
Looks good for a home project, but the gaps below the door mirror shield make me tick
Nice work. Should be more threads like this.
Thread revival, but still a good idea. I bet if you bolted on a pocket and maybe a decorative bar that integrates the door handle, it'd look half decent.
Totally want to do..only problem is I have no a/c and would really like the windows to work since its a daily..piss on it I think I'm gonna up anyways
Great idea for broke asses like me that have destroyed door panels to damn near impossible to find decent ones

I like them (much more than my trashed ones ). Nice job on the write up and thanks for sharing it.
the windows work fine with the door cards on.
the car is a daily so i dont want it to look too much like a track rat if you know what i mean.
the interior is slowly coming along, the door cards dont have air bubbles in them as i re-glued the vinyl.

nice job! Are those screws or push clips you used to secure door panels?

Nice work. May I suggest a "floppy" door pull to complete the vintage sports car vibe.
they are screw clip things
