I figured I'd pull out my wheel well liners today and take a look at the inside of the fenders. Being a winter driven car, I was expecting to find some undesireable things behind there, and I wasn't looking forward to it at all. There was about half an inch of a substance resembling hard packed mud, under this was surface rust. It was quite ugly. I unbolted the bottom of the fender and cleaned it up really well and threw a coat of por-15 on it. Once that dries, I'm going to hit it with some rubberized undercoating. I'm glad I got to it before it was anything but surface rust.

I can't identify that at all! Is that even part of a car?
Wait I see it now, it's the inside bottom of the fender. The ground was throwing me off, no depth perception.
Our passenger side has been eaten through. Replacement fender on the way, will also require some work on inner substructure. Glad you caught yours earlier.
