Tips on replacing thermostat on 535i M30 engine

I will be replacing the thermostat tomorrow morning on my 1990 535i, but I couldn't figure out how to align the thermostat. I see the arrow on the thermostat itself, but can't seem to figure out where the arrow on the thermostat housing. I only thing I see is the letter "A" on the thermostat housing. Thanks in advance guys.

There is an alignment mark on the thermostat. The parts guy at BMW told me to make sure it aligns correctly to the thermostat housing. He showed me the arrow on the thermostat and told me it must be aligned.

That's true. If there's an arrow, it points straight up (straight up, not straight towards the top of the engine). If there's a mark, it should be at the very top. This is to assist bleeding. It's not going to affect thermostat operation any other time, and it's not really important on an M30 like it is on an M5x engine.

And on that subject, you can bleed both sides of the thermostat of an M30 without ever starting it. Procedure is to remove a bolt from the therm housing (an unused sensor position) fill the expansion tank until coolant comes out the bolt hole. Put the bolt back in, and fill until coolant comes out the bleed screw (open the bleed screw before you start filling). After that, you start the engine and warm it up, bleeding every so often.
