Red face My 318i Thread - No Longer a 318

I finally got around to starting a progress thread, so here it is. It is a 1985 318i with a 5spd, sunroof, and the factory pfeba spoiler/front air dam package . As far as interior/exterior, it is delphin metallic on gray checked cloth. My goal is a complete restoration so that it can be a daily driver again, as my dad drove it from sometime in the 90's to 2000. This is the car, as it is now. [IMG][/IMG]
My Crappy Interior (Drivers seat was temporary just to hold it together. Floor mats are also temporary[IMG][/IMG])
    My replacement seats [IMG][/IMG]
So far, I have replaced most of the fuel injection system (gummed up), and below are my floor pans before repair.[IMG][/IMG]. Later today, I will post pics of some recent work I've done, along with a specific thread for my custom cupholder. Stay tuned!

    Cool I'm back, with pics!

For some reason, imageshack would not let me upload to the forum. So, I joined flickr to no avail. Finally, photobucket payed off. I am posting this just to get it back at the top, so people will see it. Enjoy!

    Great job. Keep it up.

Yeah photobucket is great. If you have an iPhone try using their app. It works great for me. Just can't resize images.

Looks like your dash is NOT cracked? How did you manage that?

Overall it looks as if our body is in good shape just needs a paint job. Have fun with the restoration.

Two words: Dash Cap. I got a dash cap from bavarian autosport for christmas, and recently installed it. Underneath it, the dash is one of the worst, if not the worst I have ever seen. By the way, congrats on turboing your m10. Good to know that there are others like me who know 4cyl's are more than something to take up space.

    Today, I did this: [IMG][/IMG]
Yes, I ran the rattle can primer, but that's what wet sanding is for. Underneath it is bondo, and a hole where a dent puller was used, it was a very large dent. Here are the new seats that I installed:[IMG][/IMG]
If you look at the before pic above, you will see that I took out the beater mats, and installed my new ones. Last but not least, here is the car with even more primer[IMG][/IMG]
Does anyone know how to fix a pfeba spoiler that is cracked? My car has the pfeba package, and the spoiler is cracked. Any input is appreicated.

Just a quick update: These are the aftermarket wheels that have been setting in my trunk. They are a temporary install, I still have to get new tires.

I picked them up from summit racing for $331 shipped. I had to build my own mounts, I used square tubing. They are slightly firm, you feel like you are really driving something (which you are). Plus, $200 cheaper than factory sport seats. If you have a coupe, they do flip forward. To everyone, do you like the aftermarket wheels?

They are american racing, not sure of the name. They are the standard bolt pattern, and are period correct to the car.My dad got them from an uncle when he sold his 325i coupe in the 90's and installed them on this car. As for size, they are 15" wheels. A update: The e30 bodywork extravaganza has begun! As of today, I wet sanded the passengers quarter, and discovered a low spot I did not know about. Luckily, it was small enough to just be filled. I found another spot, but it got dark too fast. The bondo was just sanded flat, and primer was put over it to protect it. Here are some pics [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG]

Ok, so more bodywork! I eventually wet sanded the entire passengers side of the car, and discovered this. Here it is filled:[IMG][/IMG] Here are some random sanding pics [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG]
    In for some primer

    Masked off

    Primered on 1 side...

On a side note, advance auto parts pulled a fast one. Their catalog lists these bearings as the proper bearings for my alternator, however they were wrong. And of course, my alternator was damaged in the process. Luckily, I found a remanufactured unit on ebay with 3000 miles on it for $55, avoiding $143 new alternator. Coming soon.. more bodywork!

Sorry, no pics, but here is an update: As of now, I am waiting on my replacement alternator (screw Advance Auto Parts), and window switches + speed sensor from 328ijunkie. (Please don't be the cluster). After I install the switches, my interior will be complete! I did some slight bodywork today, but ran out of time. Hopefully, new pics tomorrow.

Small but large update, sorry, no pics. I got the alternator, and switches + speed sensor. Switches work, however cluster is shot. More of the front end is primered, and a nasty repair was discovered. There was what looked like a slight dent in the drivers side fender, so I took it off since there were cracks in clear. The dent was filled with WOOD FILLER! I busted out the 80 grit at this point. It was a nasty dent. I bat it out, and then filled, longboard, and DA. NO MORE DENT! With the exception of the wood filler removal, drivers door got the same treatment. As for monday and this morning, sinus infections are not fun, and living in the allergy capitol of the world does not help. Tonight though, she hunkered down. The rear windows and taillights are out, as I am close to paint, but major severe weather is in progress as I update. She's all tarped up, and hopefully no hail!

Did your car ever spend time in NJ? Cause it sure sounds like your PO took it to my PO's body guy who thinks masking tape is a good rust solution

Based on the floor rot, possibly. It has been to VA, according to old faded windshield sticker, and KY, as we used to live there. However, It rode in moving truck here (we had 3 cars then, now we have 5) and did not move much until 2005, when all movement ceased. So far, been on road 4 times. Any pics of your state of the art rust solution?

Mine only came to VA when the guy I bought it from bought it. Near as I can tell from the carfax, it spent it's life in NJ.

Here's one. There are a couple more in my build thread (post 19):

I mean really? Masking tape? Not even the tried and true duck tape?

They could have at least cut out the rust, and THEN taped it.

There are so many things they could have done better in dealing with this car. I mean based on the damage these leaks have been going on for years. Yet it only took me a week (first rain) to notice the wet floors

There will be more pics tomorrow, hopefully. As for today, I finally fixed the stupid door pull/armrest, whatever the name is. It had pulled off at the top. Now, I can close the door without rolling down the window!
