I noticed that there isn't a specific thread for the 318i, and other 4 cylinder bmw's. So, this thread is for anyhting 4cyl BMW. Mechanical Issues, engine swaps, pics and anything else. To get things started, here is mine. It is a 1985 318i, w/5spd, AC that doesn't work, and an interior that is currently out of the car for floor pan work.
Good idea.
Here's mine.

WOT
I forgot to mention that my car also has the factory pfeba spoiler and front air dam, though it is off for repair.
Does anyone know what are the best plugs to run in a 1985 318i? I picked up some champions on black friday at pepboys for I think 2 bucks total. Are these worth running, or are they junk?
Great idea mate!!!
I have a 84 318i with mileage that is unknown hah
It also has that stupid 3 speed auto that is just retarded Im looking to fix the weird flat spot it has when the car gets to about 3000rpm? I have no clue maybe it's a fuel issue but who knows ...
Thinking of a turbo project in the future when I do a much needed engine rebuild and tranny swap

Sorry for the gay ass iPod pic but here she is for 500$

haha sweet i had to reweld the entire exauhst but i drive it all the time... I also had to JB weld my radiator... dont know if thats a good thing?
Im fixing up my 85' 318i 5spd , and i have pretty much taken care of everything material and some extra's but have been avoiding the engine and tranny. I have done this mainly because i am lookin to "upgrade". Does anyone know a good engine swap, tranny upgrades, turbo? anything to give my car the horses it desires. Any help is appreciated. Here is a pic for your enjoyment, its in pretty good shape right now.

Yeah idk about swaps you can do anything from an ls1 to a m20 m50 those are always good...
But if your m10 is running okay then I would just do a minor engine rebuild
and a turbo kit... The m10 will last for ever ...so ive heard.
I mean they have pulled 1000hp out of those m10's in formula 1 so idk
I guess it's up to you good luck!!!

the engine swap was just an idea in case the options with beafing up my m10 were too expensive. I dont really wanna put that much weight on it to be honest. and the engine i have is good it just needs some loving. What would be a good size turbo for the engine tho? never put one on a four banger..like 1.6 maybe?
Yeah do you have a build thread or old pics of your build? And have you switched to megasquirt ... What's the advantage.. Can't you get more fuel with heavier injectors alone?
-Dom
Yay!!! 318i thread! Here's mine...1984 318i, 5spd, unknown mileage (odo says 300k+ right now, but it spins about x8 as fast as it's supposed to, yes I'm a time traveler, or my car does light speed lol), picked him (car's name is Walter) up in Atlanta for $2k. Plans are fix EVERYTHING, swap/rebuild, coilovers, and diff wheels. That's about it.
one more, as of last week

If u can have an inline-6 in a BMW, why would u prefer the 4 bangers...?

The distributor shaft gets worn out and causes hesitation/ flat spot @ 4000rpm. That is when the AFM is no longer used to meter fuel, it switches over to rpm which is read off of the distributor. Pull out your distributor and see if there is any sie to side play in the shaft. When you replace it advance the timing as far as it will go and still run smooth. Your idle may be high but it will help out if you run your A/C and will give you a little more top end. Run premium and if you hear any pinging, back off the timing until it goes away.
I'll post up a pic of my Bronzit 318i later.
