    Arrow Dynavin nav system info......e46/e39/e9x

Now that Dynavin is making nav systems for theE46, E39, E53, and E90/92 it is time to start a thread to compile the dynavin info in one place on bimmerforums. This write up is about the E46 unit but all of the units use the same basic hardware and software so although their appearance may vary, their function is pretty much the same.

Please read EVERYTHING before you ask a question, almost everything has been answered at some point and I will do my best to put all the new info this thread.[/B] Lets try to keep this thread clean and factual. Please try to keep speculation and baseless opinion elsewhere.

WARNING: Due to some very scary fraudulent situations with past sellers I STRONGLY suggest you stick to forum sponsors if you choose to purchase a Dynavin. A few forum sponsors including myself carry them and are factory authorized. When shopping keep in mind how important good customer service is......

You can also reference individual model install issues and discussions by searching in the car specific forums for the various dynavin threads that are going on....

    INSTALL
I am an installer, not full time, i run a small family business that in part sells auto parts and accessories including mobile electronics. I do the installs, Ive been doing a couple a week for 15 years so Ive done.....a lot..... I am an authorized Pioneer Electronics dealer so most of my experience relevant to the Dynavin is with the AVIC line of Pioneer units. I also have owned two cars with factory nav, a 2006 acura and a 2007 lexus, so understand where I am coming from, Ive used quite a few systems like this.

Here is a look at where things start

Regular business HU, no HK, but it doesnt matter, everything here applies to the HK system as well, I had the parrot bluetooth running off the steering wheel buttons and an ipod adapter. Its all coming out.

My system is a little more complicated than what most of you would be dealing with as I also have a 4 channel amp, front two channels running the front speakers and the rear two channels running a sub, the signal was being delivered via the factory amp input wires, cut and spliced onto RCA connectors and fed into an EQ and then into the amp.

The rear speakers are stock and still running off the factory amp although I am not using them and have the fader on the HU faded all the way to the front.

So I took everything apart and took a look at what I was in for:

Take note here that the wiring for the HVAC controls just drops down to the new location for the controls, it only has to move a few inches and there is plenty of slack. I have not yet ordered the HVAC control relocation part but the control fits the old part ok, I used a little bit of 3/8" black weatherstrip foam to support it and hold it in place, it wedges in there pretty tight and looks fine, we will see how it works out. Ignore the mess of wires on the right, thats my parrot blutooth kit, its gone now.

This is important, right in the middle of this picture you can see a white plastic arm that moves a black plastic lever in the airbox, some part of the HVAC system, this part ends up directly below the back of the dynavin unit, be careful that you dont get any wires hung up on this or you are asking for big trouble. I will double check it later from the glovebox side

Next I put the GPS receiver right behind the unit on the metal dash frame, right below the vent ducts, it is magnetic and will stick right there, reception here is good.

So then I plugged everything into the factory wiring:

Take note here since everyone seems to mess this part up

The steering wheel control harness connects to the end of this cable............

    NOT here...........

Plugged in the dynavin and put it in the dash, other people have been complaining that there isnt much room in there....they are correct. There is a good amount of space on the left side of the unit, thats where my harness and extra wire ended up. All of the AV connections ended up on top of the dynanvin, there is NO space behind or below the unit:

You can see an RCA cable and a "headphone plug" plugged into the aux in jacks for later use if I want to plug in anything to the aux in or you can run a a/v cable and use the video input as well.....more on that later....

I put all the unused plugs in a plastic bag both to protect them and to keep them from accidentally touching the chassis of the dynavin and causing any weird problems.

Shoved the dynavin in...took a couple tries to get all the wires out of the way and everything where I wanted it. Put the vents back in, and put 2 screws back in to hold everything where it belongs, here you might want to make sure everything is exactly where you want it before you tighten up the screws, the dyanvin fits very well but there is a little wiggle room and I wanted to make sure my gaps were even all the way around.

Now back to that plastic arm and lever....I had my glove compartment out to remove my old bluetooth kit so I stuck my head in there to verify that nothing was binding up the lever and arm. There was a wire back there in this pic, a little too close, I moved it.

I ran the mic, ipod cable, and aux in to where they belonged, you can put them wherever you want, in my case i put the plugs in my euro tray and the mic above the rearview mirror in the factory location. Ran the RCA cable to the trunk, I ran the rca so I could do a little experimenting using the "speaker outputs" vs.the rca outputs.

    back in one piece:

    INITIAL IMPRESSIONS
The V5 has the same fit, cosmetics, buttons, knobs etc... as the V4 and thats a very good thing, it looks OEM and overall has a quality look and feel to it.

Plugged it in and fired it up, just like the older units the V5 turns on very fast, only a couple seconds and its up and running, MUCH MUCH MUCH faster to start up than the pioneer units that I install regularly and also much faster than my oem NAVs in my acura and lexus.

Unlike with my previous dynavin install, this one was noise free as the Dynavins now come with Line Output Converters to eliminate the past unwanted noise issues, and there is now no unwanted noise in the system. The line level RCAs work great, as far as I can tell with just my ears the dynavin will go to max volume on the RCA outputs clean. This gave my system significantly more available volume than I had with the BMW headunit. Subjectively I would say it is 30%+ louder without any audible distortion. If you are running the factory amp and speakers you should expect similar or slightly better than stock sound quality.

The new interface is completely different, it has mostly orange, white and black displays that match the oem display color and style well.

Overall the audio portion works pretty good, the settings are logical and well laid out although basic, bass, trebel, fader, balance. These controls can be accessed via the settings menu but are also accessible by pressing the volume button....old school....NICE!

    RADIO

The Radio works as expected, reception seems fine and the interface is a little more intuative than it used to be. Presets are set and used on the touch screen and you can save stations by frequency or by the name. RDS data displays station,song,artist,etc...

    DVD/CD/ETC...

Also works as expected, it will play mp3 data discs with the same interface as the USB.

Picture quality is similar to the older units (and that is good!)

    BLUETOOTH
Bluetooth paired to my iphone 3GS no problem and the blutooth audio works very good, both audio and phone connect VERY fast, only a couple seconds to connect.

The bluetooth audio streaming feature does not get enough attention on the dynavin, I think it is the units best feature! With the V5 the audio quality is now good enough to use for music as well as talk! The play/pause button worked with the bluetooth audio, so I can be listening to a podcast with my iphone in my pocket, leave the car, come back and press play and pick up right where I left off. Very nice. I also stream sirius to my iphone using the sirius app or "pocket tunes" app. Works as a nice alternative to sat radio.

The phone book still doesnt work well with the iphone, the contacts do not transfer but you can access your recent dialed and received calls. Your results may vary depending on the phone. Ive had mixed results with calls, just like on the older dynavins I had the best results by using the built in mic and disconnecting the external mic.....I would suggest you experiment a bit as your results may vary.

    IPOD
The ipod interface is a work in progress, while it looks very good and displays all the right info, it takes a few too many button presses to access the required controls and I find it to be a bit too "fiddly" to use while driving. For instance, in order to go "back" you have to access a menu while it should just be a static button on the screen. I have been in touch with dynavin about this however and they are working on updating the firmware to make the interface more user friendly possibly even incorporating the steering wheel buttons into the interface. These changes will be firmware update-able so no worries for you current buyers. Its still way easier to use than a DICE or similar unit, its just that it could be MUCH better with just a couple small tweaks. (you can turn off the annoying beep)

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wtUWpFI1jc[/ame]

HOWEVER I did find that using the supplied remote control makes using the ipod interface a pleasure, with hard buttons for every function its a near perfect ipod interface.....now if dynavin could just mimic the remotes features with the on screen display or the buttons/knobs it will be fantastic!

UPDATE: Dynavin has successfully integrated the steering wheel controls into the ipod interface and this functionality will be available in a future firmware update once its been fully tested and any bugs worked out. Here it is being used in my car.....fantastic feature!

However there is still no "ipod resume" feature so the ipod interface continues to be less than ideal....

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOe0vBVzDxM[/ame]

The old models had an ipod video function....but because of a apple imposed incompatibility it didnt work unless you had a jailbroken iphone or ipod touch. Because of this Dynavin has removed the video function from the ipod interface.

BUT you can use the A/V inputs to run video off your ipod. I used an ipod>A/V plug hooked up to the aux in. You have to control it from the ipod obviously but it works.

    USB

The USB function works fine although in some ways not as well as on the older units. The new interface does not seem to have the folder limitations that the old one did but it now only support 2 layers of folders.....so it will only see your album folders and your songs but NOT your artist folders....probably not a big issue for many of you but I like to navigate my music by artist>album>song, three layers, so it doesnt work that great for me. Also the load time is a bit slow.....it takes about 45 seconds to load my 16GB USB. Not a deal breaker but the old dynavins loaded faster (although I still need to play around with the file structure to see if that speeds things up)

I got this plug from pac audio and decided to do a nice flush mounted usb in the eurotray.

    sweeeeet

    DVB-TV
Dynavin has now moved the TV tuner out of the unit and it will be available as a separate add on option, they did this to simplify production and better serve multiple markets (and probably to keep the price down as well)....different countries use different broadcast standards and in the past Dynavin had to make multiple models for different countries, now all the Dynavin E46 models will be the same and the customer will be able to add whatever tuner is appropriate for their country. I was not able to try one of these as the tuners have not been released yet but from what I understand they will be "hide away" and be controlled by the touch screen. The V5 has a large multi pin "Din" style plug in place to accept these upcoming tuners. Ill update this post when I know more.

    3G INTERNET FUNCTION
I dont yet have this working on my unit....or should I say that I am still trying to figure out what kind of data sim card to use and I dont want to get roped into a ridiculous 24 month contract just to test it out....If anyone knows a US carrier that offers a "pay as you go" plan on JUST A SIM CARD with no ridiculous fees let me know and Ill get this thing working!

    NEW SCREEN!

Dynavin is now using a matte finish screen, when used in conjunction with the supplied anti glare screen protector the glare problem that has plagued the Dynavin from the beginning is greatly improved. I specifically looked to find a reflection to take this pic, this is not the angle that I have when Im driving!

note that in the area of the screen where the rear window reflection is you can still see the display behind the glare. The screen itself is also brighter.

The new screen combined with my glare fix (see the other dynavin info thread for more info) have made glare issues a thing of the past for me.

    NAV/WINDOWS

The Nav/Windows portion of the V5 is unchanged so the following is just copied over from the old threads (note the old knobs)

The nav portion is good, the large font thing on the street names is kind of odd but is better on some of the zoom/angle settings. I also find it odd that I cant seem to make it display the direction of travel as "up" in 2D mode. I need to play around with this part some more to see if I can find settings to work a couple of the kinks like that out. Overall I would say that the Nav is on par or better than most of the other OEM or aftermarket ones I have used.

    Map screens (iGo 8)

    Looking for lunch....POI screen

the igo software is easy to modify and there is a large online community dedicated to customizing and tweaking it. Since the igo nav system is on the micro sd card in the front of they dyanavin it is easy to take out, stick it in your computer and HACK it. Im not going to go into the details here but I googled it and found some skins and some different color schemes, played around with it, and found some some stuff that I really liked, much better looking, cleaner, more adjustable, even easier to use. Here is what the skin I am using now looks like:

the skin you see here is from:
    http://www.igo8mods.com/dimka.htm

And the color scemes I found here, I liked the stuff by "Xerses"
    http://artwork-igo8.blogspot.com/search/label/scheme

Update: Im now running a customized 800x480 high res version of igo8.3, It looks amazing, it works amazing. It wasnt easy as I am not a computer programmer but i was able to figure it out (with a little help), spend some time here if you want to make it happen:

    http://dynavin.freeforums.org

There is also a lot of discussion of this on the other Dynavin info thread in recent weeks.

If you want to customize your Navigation experience.....start by looking here: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...754606&page=42 There are some good links on this page of the thread that will get you going in the right direction:

Check out the size of the fonts (yes I can see them while driving, pic quality here limited due to iphone pic while driving).....800x480.....nice!

And the windows interface, you wont see this stuff unless you go looking for it.

    windows media player

Random video of the Dynavin in action

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71P3Jz6Qa_8[/ame]

In this video Im running iGo Primo for the Nav instead of the stock iGo8...very nice!

a pic of a finished install in a fellow fanatics car, I thought it looked great in his dash!

and a shot in my car

    VERDICT:

I gave the old unit a 6/10.....with the improvements to the V5 I give it a 7/10 with potential to be an 8/10 if the ipod and USB interface improves, as it sits now it is a fantastic value, and a very very good, if slightly flawed upgrade.

    to be continued...[/QUOTE]

    DYNAVIN FAQ

If you dont see your question here, post it and ill answer it and add it to the FAQ.

    Preinstall

1: Whats the deal with all these V numbers?
Totally made up names to differentiate the various revisions that Dynavin has made to the E46 units. Versions 1-3 are basically the same, just some minor changes to circuitry and buttons, the V4s got rubber knobs and the V5 got new hardware and a new orange colored user interface to go with the new rubber knobs.

2: What AC control relocation kit do I need?
Look at the buttons....if they are all housed in the same button housing you need the "single row button" part. If you can see seams between the buttons or you have a single button with a "blank" filling in the rest of the are you need a "individual row button" part.
Tischer BMW offers a good deal on them...check it out here:
    http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthr...hlight=tischer

3: I have OEM Nav....what do I need to get to install a Dynavin?
If you have OEM Navigation your cars radio is actualy in the trunk! Because of this you will need to purchase the "5M Fakra Harness" that will extend all of the wiring from the radio in the trunk to the dynavin in your dash. The Fakra comes with an antenna extension and an extension for the steering wheel controls as well.

If you have an E39 with nav you will also need the OEM dash bracket from a non nav car for the dynavin to mount to. Part #51457037713. You can get this part from your dealer, ebay, Tischer BMW etc....

4: Will my steering wheel buttons still work?
    Yes. Plug and play.

5: Will the E46 Dynavin work with my HK system?
    Yes. Plug and play.

6: Will the E39 Dynavin work with my DSP system?
No, the DSP is a propriatory integrated system, the display on the dashboard is just a control unit and display, the amp, radio and all its functions are actually housed in the trunk. Because of its closed nature you cannot remove a part of the system and expect it to still operate. Because of this there are two options available. Option 1 is to relocate the dash mounted parts of the system to the trunk and/or glove compartment, info about how to do this can be found here:http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1553862

The second option is to bypass the factory amp altogether and install an aftermarket amp. This option is desirable if you want to upgrade your sound at the same time that you upgrade your head unit.

7: Can I watch TV on the Dynavin?
There is a television tuner available but it is a separate accessory. At this point there is only a tuner available for DVB-T markets (Europe and Australia primarily) A US ATSC tuner is expected around the end of 2010.

8: Do I need anything else?
You might want USB extensions so that you can easily access the USB plugs on the back of the unit once it is installed. There is a mini usb plug on the front that is tied internaly to one of the rear USBs and can be used to play music files and apply firmware updates but most people dont want a cord hanging off the dashboard and prefer to either use flush panel mount usbs or run the extensions to the glovebox. The dynavin also has an auxiliary audio video input, there are a number of cables that can be used with the aux in and which cord you might use depends on what you want to connect. The ipod video cord is the most common as it allows video to be played (the dynavins built in ipod cord is audio only)

9: Where can I get these cables?
From me of course.........but any car audio shop should have the parts on the shelf.

    10: How do I buy a Dynavin?
There are a few forum sponsors that sell them and of course I do too. See here: http://directory.e46fanatics.com/sit...nsor&SpCId=214 You can also contact dynavin directly and ask them where to buy....BEWARE OF SCAMMERS!!! Buy from reputable sources only.

    Install

11: What do these labels mean on the USBs and which ones should I use?
The dynavin has 2 systems running inside it, a radio/DVD/USB player and a Windows based small computer used to run the GPS system. So the "radio board" is connected to the "DVD USB" and the "windows board" is connected to the "GPS USB."

The DVD USB is used to play music/videos/pictures off a USB flash drive and is one of the selectable sources for the dynavins regular player interface. It is also used to update the firmware.

The GPS USB is used to connect to the windows board for things like the Wifi or 3G modem or the windows media player embedded in the windows menus.

12: Do I need to ground the "park" wire to make video work while the car is in motion?
No, the V5 has a setting in the radio menu called "brake," Turn it off. The V1-4 will need to have the "park" wire grounded, just tap it into the black wire on the dynavin harness or ground the wire directly to the chassis of the dyanivin using an existing screw.

13: What are these boxes with all the white/grey/green/purple wires hanging out?
The Line Output Converters, they reduce the output of the Dynavin to better match the factory amplifier, reducing and eliminating unwanted noise, if your car has an amp in the back corner of the trunk you should use them. All US cars have the amp, euro and asian cars can come either way. Installing them is easy, they go inline in the factory harness, just unplug all the bullet connectors in the factory harness and plug the LOCs into their corresponding color coded wires.

14: I hear lots of weird noises, static, beeps, etc...
    See above.

15: My Steering wheel controls dont work!
The steering wheel interface (black box with a plug on one side and a "headphone" jack coming out of the other) should be plugged into the pigtail plug on the dynavin labled IR IN....NOT the plug on the back of the unit...that plug is for the bluetooth mic.

Take note here since everyone seems to mess this part up

The steering wheel control harness connects to the end of this cable...........

    NOT here...........

16: What is the best place to put the bluetooth mic?
Every install seems to be different but the general consensus seems to be that the built in mic works better than the external mic, I encourage you to experiment and see what works best in your car.

17: Will the Dynavin work with a backup camera?
Absolutely, there are many cameras available online as well as from some of the dynavin dealers. The dynavin has a dedicated plug for the camera and a wire that is tied in with the camera power wire so that when the backup camera is activated by the reverse lights, the dynavin will automatically switch to the backup cam.

    Useage

18: The screens gives me a warning message when I try to watch a DVD or video?
One the V1-V4 you will need to ground the parking brake wire, on the V5 just go into the radio menu and turn off the setting labled "Brake"

19: Why is the time always wrong on the radio screen?
If you have RDS turned on, the Dynavin will get its time settings from the radio station you are listening to. If the radio station is broadcasting inaccurate RDS time data....your clock will be wrong on your dyanvin! Turn off RDS in the settings menu or call your local radio station and tell them to fix their RDS time settings!

20: Where is the setting to make the time 12 hour instead of 24? There is no setting, thats just the way it is.

21: Whats with all the different menus?
The Dynavin has two systems running in parallel. One system runs the radio, DVD/CD, ipod. USB etc.... The second system is running windows and is used to run the Nav program that is located on the SD card....this can be confusing initially as there are three separate menus, one for the radio etc... functions, one for the windows functions, and one for the navigation program functions. Once you spend some time with the unit and understand how it works you will better understand the different menus and how to use them.

22: Does the Dynavin have internet access?
It certaily can! Dynavin offers their 3G modem that can be plugged into one of the USB ports and when loaded with a data sim card allows access to the internet through a number of available browsers. There are also some "hacks" available from a third party to enable wifi tethering to a smartphone. http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=794137

23: What is the best way to use the ipod control?
Until Dynavin adds a "back" button to the ipod interface, using the touch screen controls can be a bit fidley. Dynavin has managed to enable steering wheel control with the latest firmware so that you can actually control the ipod completely via the steering wheel buttons, this works well enough, use the up and down buttons to move the cursor, the RT button to go back, and a long press of the talk button to select. However I find that the remote control is by far the easiest way to control the ipod while driving. Just use the arrow buttons and the "root" button on the lower part of the remote to move the cursor, skip pages, make selections and go back in the menus

    Nav

24: What are all these other programs I keep hearing about?
The Dynavin will run any number of navigation programs, they just have to be placed on an SD card and if they are comaptible the dynavin will run them. It comes with iGo8 but iGo Primo is proving to be very popular, search the forums for details.

25: Everytime I touch the screen, the music comes from back speakers only.
Go into the windows menu (the one with the lowrider car) go to setup, go to volume, set "keystroke" to "non"
Then start the nav program, go to menu, go to settings, go to sounds, turn key sounds off and turn up the volume controls.

26: When I press the Nav button everything is in the wrong language or even "boxes"....
    Do this:

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSkCepIYHIs[/ame]

27: My Dynavin says "navigation software not found"
    Do this:

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kf47a8mfXYo[/ame]

28: I can see the Navigation program but its in italian/chinese/etc...!
    Do this:

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uviyO06455g[/ame]

29: I did the above settings but every time I turn it off the Dynavin looses its memory!
For reasons I dont completely understand the dynavins sometimes dont hold their memory on the windows settings when new. This usually only lasts a day or two and then it will hold the settings. As far as I can tell there may be some kind of battery backup that needs to charge for a day or two in order for the memory to hold.

    Firmware updates

30: How do I get the firmware update for my V5
Contact your dealer....currently you can also just follow this link: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=799537
Register on the dynavin forum then download, follow the instructions to the letter.

31: Can I update my V1-4 to make it look like a V5?
No, the V5 has completely different hardware and firmware. The newer firmware is not compatible with the older hardware.

Useful Links Thanks to forum member "thejames" for compiling all of these links to all of the known Dynavin info out there on the web, great job James!

    Hi Jeff,

You are right in that it got buried, I missed it as well !

That is an absolutely fantastic writeup! absolutley phenomenal and massive respect to you for providing answers to all the questions that are lying around on various threads on various forums! I'm sticking this into my favourites links and I'll be pointing potential customers to it for reference

I'll be in touch with you soon for an update from me too!

    Cheers, Dennis!

Yeah, it is the same basic write up that I originally posted on that other "E46 fan" site....

But I updated it and did some corrections and additions and posted it here for the bimmerforums community.

It should be required reading for anyone who is considering a Dynavin!

I just finished my dynavin install in my e39 M5, but damaged my SD card. I have been trying to source the files that I need and put them on a new SD card that I have, but have had little luck in doing so. Is there any possibility that one of you Dynavin gurus could help?

I have been finding a bunch of hit on the Dynavin support site, but most of the links are either expired or broken.

    TIA

man I wish they had something like this for an older car like an e30, I really like how OEM it looks in the e46/e39 and even the e9X series cars without idrive.

Thanks Jeff! I found that thread before, but his new link is broken too. I sent a PM to 2000_328CI because he is semi local and might be able to help me out.

    I appreciate it!

Get yourself the latest Kenwood KIV700 (I think they have this model in the USA!) single DIN with excellent backlight variance to match the BMW colours and all the latest features. I think it'd look quite good in an E30!

back in the day I always had Alpine head units in mine and my brothers myriad of E30s! looked fine as well ! If you need to have double DIN in an E30, consider a flip out screen type single DIN head unit - preferably from a premium brand manufacturer !

    Cheers, Dennis!

yes....dynavins makes units for those of us who have cars with....problematic....installs, you E36, E30, etc.. guys can choose from dozens of single din units that all would look great and install easily. Us E46, E39, E90 guys dont have those choices...

well, not without spending a ton of money and it looking bad....

I am completely hopeless when trying to install something like this... I live in CO and was wondering if there were places that would install this for me?
This would be a really cool pic of my car if only I knew how to get a picture to work on this forum

    Jeff,

Would you do a group buy on Android units when they are released if you have enough interest? This is what I want to do for my e39. Just a thought.

well, the E39 android units are not even on the horizon at this point, maybe late summer or fall....maybe....

I dont do group buys, every one I have ever seen has turned into a mess for both the buyers and the sellers. The margins on these are not sufficient for a substantial discount anyway.

Any decent car audio place would have no problem installing the dynavin, its easier than the regular installs they do all day.

Are these units compatible with the factory installed 6 stack cd changer? I can't find any info on it but am looking at a couple of Chinese machines which do.

Is anyone experiencing this issue? As soon as I lose a GPS signal - Go in my work garage, home garage, etc... my Navigation side locks up and won't restart unless I do a complete reset of the system - getting old.
I am wondering if it has to do with the startup file. I have a 16gb card so i know it isn't that, can anyone help??

Is anyone experiencing my issue where the DVD would not recognize any disc that's loaded?
Everything else works but the DVD. I installed this Dynavin E39A must be a WinCE unit last Oct 15, 2011 and have not been able to get it to recognize any disc, be it a CD, CD-R, DVD or an actual movie. Am I expecting too much? Do the files have to be in a specific format? I apologize for not getting this unit from Jeff at J & T Distributing and I am turning to anyone for help. Just so you know, I got the unit from BimmerNav.com. They have asked me to try all sorts of thing to no avail. The last communication I got was they would send my issue to Dynavin to see what they suggest. I am preparing myself for a long fight it seems but If anyone will be able to help me, it would really really be very much appreciated.

Unfortunately a couple of my local stereo install shops took a look at the Dynavin unit and refused to do the install job for me because they were unfamiliar with the unit and couldn't figure out how to do the install into my E39.

Does anyone know any local shops in SoCal that have experience doing BMW Dynavin installs?

Excellent Write up, I have been looking at double din touch-screen for a while now and have been debating between them and the dynavin. Finally made the jump and decided to go with the dynavin. Im debating between the d99 and the d95 system. any recommendations? and also do the steering wheel controls work for the bluetooth capabilities of the unit. Thank You.

d99s E46s are here now, E39s and E9x expected in a week or two, I know when we will see more D95s. Yes, the SW controls work for bluetooth.
