8 Series (E31) (1991 - 1997) As the last E24 rolled off the production line in 1989, its replacement was quick on its heels to fulfill the fantasies of those looking for a touring coupe with all of the luxury, performance, and prestige of a BMW, only now with both 8 and 12 cylinder engines.

Don't worry, a day from now like 4 copies of your post will show up on roadfly As far as I can remember, what you're getting is a generic engine electrical fault. I know, that's no help, but neither is the error. While it refers to a fault putting the tranny in safe mode, the cause is often hard to figure since it could be anything. Have you done anything to the car recently? How are the batteries? It is very common for weird things like this to be caused by week and dying batteries. Try searching for "trans fail safe" in roadfly. You'll get everything from plug wires to air filters but its a start.

Good luck!

When do you get it and what happens when it comes on?
Does it reset when you restart?
Is your display hard to read because of missing lines? Display is Fixable cheap.

Keep us up to date

Oh BTW-When you log in on Roadfly make sure he little box in the login window is checked or nothing works.

Thanks for the replies...
ajw- i have not done anything to the car besides wash it as for the batteries...the car is driven every few days or so...

TerryY- all the lines of the display work. The weird thing about it that sometimes the message displays and the car drives like its hauling a ton of junk and other times it doesnt display and the car is zippy...

Also, the triangle with the circle around it and the exclamation point inside lights up ( i hope you all know what I'm talking about since im using so much technical jargon )
Thanks for all ur help guys! what do u suggest i do?

The transmission is in limp home mode when the light is on. It locks itself into one of the higher gears 3rd I think and doesn't shift at all.

Thre should be a code to read but you need a code reader to get it and other than the dealer I'm not sure who else might have one. Try calling the local independents and asking if they can read transmission codes on an E31 or E32.

The triangle with the circle should be the traction control light. It flickers on when the traction control is doing it's thing.

If the light is on all of the time then either the ASC switch on the center console is stuck down or the traction control system is faulting during self test (Broke).

hey terry
the light is constantly on while driving, tho when i looked up the message in the owners manual it mentioned something about the light staying on and not going off after start up (one of the few things that I did get out of reading that.) anyways, I have a couple of phone calls to make around here i suppose. I will let you all know what happens.

Find the problem yet?

Check the plug that connects to the air sensor between the air cleaner and the engine too. Just had that problem on the 740.
Gives Trans Prog if it is loose!!

BTW I have a couple of sets of "Inexpensive chips"
if yours is a pre OBD2 car (mid 95 build or earlier)

I believe that they are far better than Dinan chips and probably come close to the Conforti. Euro chipper claims 320 hp from the V8. After the Dinan that was in mine (296 hp claimed) it certainly feels like 320 on the butt dyno and it passes German emissions testing.

Check that connector by the air cleaner box before you rip anything out. And start the car twice after any change you make. It may not clear on the first try!

The 840 chip is $100 and if it doesn't make it go noticeably better I buy it back.

The sticker is on the back end of the drivers door.

The build date is the date at the upper right like 05/94 on this picture from mine.
