Finally I found my “mystery” metal noise between 2-3 RPM - the 4 bolts arm between engine and transmission cracked
How the hell it happens ? have no clue
I was thinking it’s a VANOS noise but after new rattles it was clear that its something else ... took me some time to find this problem
Somebody knows what is the part # ?
Also should I buy this part from dealer or just weld it ?
Looks like not a big deal to replace it , only 4 bolts , but i dont know what is the part #
Thanks !

those pics help in noway to figure out what we're looking at.
Nothing is indestructible on a car. Road shock/vibration and weather plays a factor over time deteriorating and cracking down any part of the car.
You need a shot from a distance, a bit further out to clarify what part you are referring to exactly.
here we are
Looks like i can weld it ?

Steel is easier to weld than aluminum.
Did you check ebay for a good used part?
How many miles in your car?
Don't think this issue is related to how many miles ( i have only 88k ) but more to
roads and weather condition
yes Paul , its part #11 , cost 17$ from local dealer so no weld
thanks for help guys !

champaign,
Just want to digress a bit.
I read on another thread re Rear Subframe bushings, did you do all 7 bushings (4 on the subframe and 3 on the diff)?
What were their (7 bushings) condition then?
CNN
7 subframe bushings I replaced on another car - 2001 525i
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1215641
The real issue was a small front diff bushing
Not related to this problem, but as people said - everything brakes
LOL

Thanks to this thread, I was able to quickly identify source of an identical issue in my own car. My car is at 123k miles and is lightly driven as a commuter car. The only contributing factor may be that the exhaust was dropped about 2.5 years ago to replace torque converter.

The metallic rattling sound occurred intermittently for me. It typically happened at 2250 or 1750 rpm under load but only if the car had been parked under the hot sun for some time. This lead me to believe that the induced resonant humming only occurred with some heat expansion of the exhaust or other parts.
Now I just need to track down the source of a pesky oil leak (looks to be either oil pan gasket or rms).
Is this sound a kind of jingling noise? Less like a heat shield buzz, and more of a set of keys?
Wow. Nice find. I would have went crazy pin pointing that noise from that spot.
Hi - what was the part number for this?
