    M57TUD30 in a E36/5

I finally registered here, been a spectator for a very long time..

an introduction of myself would be that i am from Iceland, name is Viktor and i have had a serious relationship with the Bavarian automaker since the fall of 2005..

    I have 2 BMWs, an E39 535i V8 M-tech with a drivetrain from a E39 M5, suspension and brakes.

    Then there is this one;

This is originally a BMW E36 316Ti Compact..

but i am in the middle of swapping a M57TUD30 into it..

if anyone has any schematics that instruct in how to connect the vehicle electronics to the engine electronics (i know many have swapped S62 and M62 motors into E36s and faced the same problems) they are welcome to send them my way

here are a few pictures of the swapping process:

and YES, these are 19" rims...

    So true.

We would love to help but most of us has never owned a diesel engine car. Best of luck though.

This is one of my favorite powerplants on the market today. We DO get it in the US of backward-emissions A in the form of m57tu2d30(335d and X5d). If only it came with 3-pedals here, sadly just the slush box for us.

What sort of management are you using? flashed factory? stand-alone?

please keep us informed as this progresses, I'm excited to see the results. It should be fast....425+/- ft.lbs. in a ti.....sounds like fun to me

I hope to use a reflashed factory ECU, with a remap of 300hp/660-700nm..

Otherwise i will have to go the aftermarket standalone route but i'm not sure on wich to pick for a diesel motor with such advanced stuff..

Project is on hold because of faulty motor mount fabrication by me, i will be having a professional build better mounts hopefully soon after new years...

The car is a 11/00, wich makes it a 01' model...

I am looking for a 2:79 diff from a E30 325e (i can go with the higher ratio diff from the later 325e E30s aswell, it only has to be LSD)

I think this torque monster will be crazy in the ti Compact and hope to have this baby driving by the beginning of the summer..

Wich was later owned by me and is the primary reason i'm sticking the same motor in a ti

jeemu & Gintaras, thank you... i will look into this !

This is definately good info, and i hope the guys @ Supergreitis will share some knowledge, i will most definately have to get someone from lituania to translate the e-mails for me...

I was totally unaware that i could purchase ECU units directly from BOSCH, but the latter option seems very good...

E34 TDS diff is 2,65 and is the same diff as E30, just use E30 325 cover plate on it. Have this under the E30 TDS.

M57 would be my next choice for the E30 but i need a sump with the bulge on the front end like the E34 and i don't think there is a M57 engine which has that. Electronics are my main concern to, especially if you have a very young model with the CANBUS system.

Thanks for this information !!! i know of a 525TDS wich has LSD... Manual Transmission... i thought they all had 3.15 or is that only auto tranny ?

i am lucky enough to NOT have CANBUS, but electronics are still a bit tricky..

Looks like i will be adapting E39 electronics and E36/5 electronics for this, hopefully it will not take too long !

    Ok, gearboxes....

who wants to place a bet on how long my S5D 250G - TBDH will last ?

i am seriously going to run this transmission until it blows into smitherines...

    i am running a flywheel and clutch off a E39 520d... 228mm

Not sure if i can fit the E39 530d 240mm clutch (same as in US 540i) with this gearbox... but if this box blows up... i have these two options for replacement and i would love your feedback on this:

    S5D 260Z - THMY from an E34 525tds

    or

    S5D 280Z - THCM from an E39 520d

and could anyone explain why the E46 320d (wich is a lighter application than the E39 520d) got a the same 240mm clutch as in the US 540i and E39 530d ?

    while the E39 520d had the 228mm clutch ???

Hi. You need Sachs Race 240mm cluch in there.
Or multi disk Tilton etc. Others don last.
I have my car 228mm with 4plate sinter disk and it slippery on 700nm

It's all about the bellhousing on the gearbox... the 228mm disc is probably the biggest i can fit in the 250G !"

The 250G can be found in on the back of M40/M42/M43.... and also on the back of early M50 (pre-vanos?) later M50 came with ZF S5D 310Z - THDM & S5D 320Z - THDU

    Update on plans;

I will be swapping post 11/00 E39 interior electrics into the E36/5 chassis for starters, this will be done so that i can run a shakedown on the car pre-summer and upgrade everything that might need upgrading...

i think the weak link would be tranny/clutch...

i am also looking to upgrade brakes, i will most probably be running E46 330i brakes in the front and the OEM E36/5 rear brakes... (same as E36 325i)

I can also buy rotors and calipers from a Mercedes CL55 AMG, wich are drilled rotors.... and i know of a guy who has done this conversion.... but i think this is both time consuming and too much work since this will be a big overkill for this 1100kg Compact :P

You could save a bit of weight on the brakes and just go with e36 m3 front brakes. The rotors may be slightly smaller in diameter and thickness but the caliper piston is bigger in the m3 setup and using cross drilled rotors puts you a little closer to the stock brake weight. Throw in some SS brake lines and youre in business. Its what ive done with my compact. Id suggest changing the rear pad compound to keep up with the change in brake bias as well.
