Well I was bored again and had ordered the mufflers awhile ago so i did the exhaust today. I have no cats and the magnaflow mufflers and it is the best sounding exhaust I have heard on any car in a long time. I have $4000 in my exhaust on my 911 and this sounds much better. When I first cut off the mufflers today I wanted to hear what it sounded like with just the delete and I was not impressed. There was too much metallic resonance from the stock system and this might be because I do not have cats. The mufflers did not really quite it in comparison to just the delete but it pulled out the high pitch metallic noise. There is a small rasp left in the tone which I might add triangulated borla resonators later to pull out the rasp in mid range. Overall it has an extremely nice deep rumble that carries throughout the rpm band.
there are a lot of write ups on this but i have found a few tricks.
Here are my cutouts...... I printed out the cutouts but lost them on the way to the shop so I just made two cardboard templates at cut out the bumper
For placement I cut the new mufflers a bit.... there is a line on the muffler from manufacturing and I just cut at the line. Here is a pic of the line. you can barely see a line in the metal between the scorched part and the stainless.
Here is how I cut it. I cut the inlet pipe of the muffler... the reason I did this is because I cut the stock tail pipe bend off the stock muffler and it is almost a perfect bend to meet up with the existing tubing. When I cut off the stock mufflers I cut at the end of the pipe right where the pipe meets the muffler. If you do this you can use the stock tip to make your bend and then just sleeve it to the pipe.
here is a pic of the sleeve.
in this pic the center section between the magnaflow and the old pipe is actually the stock tip cut off the old muffler. Sorry for the welds. I have been using a tig too long and this was done with my mig.
This is how I hold mufflers when I was welding them in and attaching the brackets.
Here is a cool shot from my friend when I was welding. It reminds me of Back to the Future.
Here is a pic of the exhaust when finished. It started raining so I did not have a chance to take any when it was on the ground but I will and I will add a sound clip now and after I install triangulated resonators.

Look awesome man, very clean. I like the use of the bump molding around the cut outs to clean it up
Very nice. I am interested in how it sounds and if there is any drone from inside the car at any RPM. Thanks,
John
I will take a video tomorrow. There does not seem to be any drone so far but I have not driven that much.

I made an offer on ebay. I did not do too bad. You can probably find then somewhere cheaper. He was asking 204 each and I made an offer for less.
Good stuff! Is there a specific type for the E38 or a MF parts #?
Thanks!

magnaflow 14816. They are the ones that everyone has been using. They have a couple other styles. Oval tips ect.
Cool, thanks!
My only concern would be cutting the bumper for the tips...

Here is a link from e38.org. It's not bad just measure twice and be careful.

Will you help me with mine??? Should I lower the car first then do the Magnaflow mods? Decisions, decisions!!!
Here are some videos! The camera does not catch the sound well, it makes it sound more crackly than deep.

Man that sounds nice!!! I like it!!!
It started raining again. I will take a better sitting still video when it slows down out there.
Thanks for the video and info. Can you hear the exhaust while cruising? Is there any drone or noticeable exhaust over stock when cruising? I know that when you get on it, it will get loud, but I _HATE_ exhaust drone. I plan on doing headers, cats, Megaflow resinator/x-over and megaflow exhaust. I just don't want any drone!!! So I am very interested in how yours sounds at cruise. Video won't tell the real story.
Thanks,
John
Nice job!
Follow me on Instagram @SEVEN40iL
i do not have any constant drone. I will get a little drone around 1500rpm but it never lasts more than a split second.
