Did my Vanos today, ordered the seals kit from beisan as well as the anti rattle kit, decided that i wont need the anti rattle because there was no rattle coming from the VANOS cyclinders.
Overall it took about 4 1/2 hours. Pretty self explanatory DIY, nothing too serious...
Special thanks to Dane, he helped me lay out the ground work for this operation.
I have some pictures so you guys can take a look... Enjoy...
Overall the car drives smoother, their is an even distribution of power, the car has increased torque in lower RPM Range... I'm happy with the results....

Dude....no pics...lol
Great job though probi
That's really nice to have this job done nicely.
Could you tell me what syptoms you have before?
BMW e46 328i, Deep Blue.
Sure, BTW Maxi could you see the pictures?
Most of all i had uneven distribution of power, and a lack of power at lower RPM Range. Also the car would sometimes find lots of power at 3K RPM's and just take off.....
Now everything is smooth and in the 1-3 RPM range there is more torque.... I shift through gears a little bit quicker because of the extra toque in that power range.
How was cutting those old seals off? Mine were a whore and a half and very hard not to knick or scratch the piston.

Exacto Knife worked well for me.
Good Job!
I think I am having similar symptoms as you but for my E36 325i coupe 1993. Was wondering if the vanos has anything to do with that. I find the car lacking power in the lower RPM as well. J haven't had anything done with the Vanos as far as I know. Worth having it fixed? Thanks.

The E36 Vanos is a single Vanos system and requires the special tools to do the job unlike our E46's that can be done without.

The little light on the fender should just slide forwards about a quarter of an inch, it's on a spring clip, and pull out the end closest to the door.

Ok just wanted to tell you thanks so much!!! I just went out and put them in without having to ask someone to do it for me. I really do appreciate your time
Alex, I dont believe that the symptoms for single VANOS are as severe.... One thing that i can definitely reccomend is that you check the intake boot... If their is a tear in that boot, you will have dramatic loss of power Ask Dane, the first post on this thread is from him, he'll send u the pic...
Does your car have a SES light on? Also on cold starts does it rev up and go down continuously, those are some questions related to the intake boot or any hoses related....
As far as the Vanos, i do feel a difference, how ever there is a 200 mile break in before i feel the full affect, Ill keep u posted...
Haha, yea.... I was stoked when i saw how clean this was.... I saw another job that was kinda orange, and people were telling that guy that his was nice and clean, so i was like this is way cleaner!!
Good luck with ur job man, have a lot of spare rags laying around..

My valve cover is aluminum not plastic. Is that normal?

I don't think the Intake Boots are the same on the E36's and Dane isn't the only one with pics...

Sorry about that Phil, my bad.
lol i was jk
Yeah mine was a little orangey, but definitely not grungy or poo-filled like some I've seen. Either way, yours was so clean my first thought was that you cheated and cleaned it up before the pics but no, it's just a damned clean engine! Congrats, good sign of things to come for your sweet lookin' ride!
Lookin real good....now that I can see the pics. You wearing gloves. Wouldn't want to hurt those soft hands I guess....
