I have 2 class 8 bolts that are too long right now. I also have 2 class 10 bolts that fit and wanted everyone's opinion on what class I should need? I want to be able to work on the motor and tear it down without any problems so what do you all recommend? 8 or 10? I know I need a total of four but thought I'd try to see whats best before another trip to the hardware store.
Thanks
(If a moderator could change the title of the thread to reflect class instead of grade that would be best for future searches)

they are metric so it should be class 8.8 or 10.9, not grade. Either way though they are a 12mm bolt which is about 1,000,007 times stronger than what is needed to hold it on the stand. Class 8.8 is more than enough.

Is this for the S52?
Heh. You're prolly right Craig. My Harbor Freight stand has held up just fine for many many engines.
I have the cheapy three wheel Harbour Freight too.
and I purchased a 4 wheel stand off craigslist.
Its always surprised me... the weight of these engines
hanging on a couple welds and a few bolts.

WHAT ENGINE! I want to know detailz!
M52....nothing special.

I got the 3000's...
Thanks to Jason, that thing is way heavier than the M50 we picked up!
Like Jason said an M52. Has a blown HG, leaking coolant between the head/block (You can see it in the 1st pic in between cyl 5 and 6). Supposedly has 50K miles...
Anyways I did some work on it, block is still really dirty/oily but eventually it will get cleaned up. Everything looks good so far.
Seems like there were 2 valve covers installed as the bolt was covered by one, look at the pic towards the front of the engine. I just cut the VC as I will be replacing it in the future. I'll have to rip the gasket off and remove the bolt later. Also removed the headers and I'm done for tonight. First time removing the VC so I have a lot to learn about taking it apart and then putting it back together. I'll probably start a thread once I have more pictures but rebuild probably wont be for awhile now.
This may end up being built or just something to play with. I wonder if there are any TT stg 2 users with the built 2.9 'frankenstein' motors out there? If so how does it work out for them?

using 8.8 on mine, holding just fine.
HF stand as well. Would def not trust my life with this thing lol, but it without a doubt gets the job done.
I also have a HF engine hoist, and that thing seems solid as a rock.

So I went to the hardware store and I failed at an attempt to get correct bolts for my engine stand. I have 2 questions:
1. What are the specs on the bolts
2. Where did you attach it too since I only see 2 spots on the back of the block
TWO HOLES HIGH, TWO HOLES LOW.
Go to realoem with your VIN and view the tranny you have.
There are some bolts that hold your trans to your block.
realoem lists the bolt specs
ok thanks
M12, IIRC
you get to troubleshoot the length
I was thinking 5 inches.
again,
IIRC 85-95 mm
It also depends on your engine stand. Jmargo brought one of his bolts over that he had from his motor and it was too long because we had different stands. I honestly at this point cannot remember the length, it was an M12 though.

Length shouldn't matter, the bolts don't bottom out. 85-130mm sounds fine I can measure what I have on my stand... But it depends on the stand.
