that is the plug for teh switch that is removed at the dealer when the techs take it out of transport mode and perform the PDI inspection on it. When the car is in transport to the dealer they flip this switch to disconnect the battery from the car to keep it fully charged. It is nothing to worry about. the other portion was removed from the battery.

Old topic, but do you recall or can show me where exactly you found this plug? I have the S818A MAIN BATTERY SWITCH and I am trying to find out (E36 convertible) where it was located from factory.

Not sure what you would need it for as its only really used by the dealers when shipping the car across the states or over seas... its located behind/under the rear seats.

JohnF linked me to the BMW TIS where the BMW instructions are for removal and returning of this cable. According there, it fed through a plug under the rear seats, but but actual switch is located on the passengers seat, so the driver moving the car, can easily get to it.

I would need it, as it's kind nice when working on the car and you need to disconnect the battery. So instead of taking off the +/- terminal, you just flick the switch.
