Anyone have issues programming to your garage door?

Hi all.

In attempting to program my e39 (2003) integrated garage door opener I have followed the user manual to the letter.

- I hold buttons 1 and 3 down for about 30 seconds until the light begins to blink.
- I hold my garage xmitter button down while holding down button 1
- After about 5 seconds or less, the light blinks rapidly.

I assume at this point the unit is programmed, but pressing '1' does nothing to my garage door.

Anyone have this issue, solutions, or ideas on what I can do next?

Thanks,
John

2 things to try:

1) If you have a rolling code garage door opener (If it's not 10+ years old, you do) you have to repeatedly press the Opener button in 1-second intervals while holding the homelink button to program the code correctly. Go to the Homelink website and use the Canadian instructions. I don't know why they put the rolling code instructions there, they just did... http://www.homelink.com/programming/...ming.taf?do=ca

2) Press the "train" or "program" button on the opener power head to recognize the homelink as an authorized remote.

Tangent's right -- you have to put the garage door opener itself (the receiver) into a "learn" mode so it will be able to recognize the signals of your remote (sender).

Sort of - except that Tangent's instructions weren't quite correct

To program a rolling code door opener:

-Press the first and third buttons to clear prior codes
-Unplug your garage door opener (to keep the motor from overheating while you are training your homelink
-Press and hold the desired button on your car until it blinks slowly. Then press the button on your handheld remote until the homelink blinks quickly
-within 30 seconds
-plug in your door opener, press the learn button and press and hold the same homelink button that you just programmed

That's it.

When I first tried programming mine by just holding the transmitter button it wouldn't work. I had to press it repeatedly like Homelink's directions say so it would learn the rolling code algorithm. This worked for both my last place's Chamberlain opener and my current Genie.

Instead of unplugging the garage door opener, you can also engage the "lock" function if it has one so it simply won't respond to any transmitter.

FWIW, I did none of that to either one of my openers -- didn't unplug, didn't "lock." I just put the openers in "learn" mode, and followed the instructions in the cars' manuals. This worked for both an older and a newer model opener, on both my BMW and my wife's Avalon. You do have to do it w/in 30 seconds, though, which is actually a more generous time period than it sounds like, if you're already familiar with the steps.

It won't learn the rolling code until after you press the "learn" button.

You are correct, however, that you have to use the "Canadian" instructions sometimes to have the Homelink recognize your handheld.

Let me give you one more. I got my new 335d on Friday and try as I might, I couldn't get it to pair with my door openers. Mine are not rolling code (they are over 10 years old), and they had paired fine with the Johnson Contol link in the Acura and the Honda, and had paired fine with the Mazda 6 and the Toyota Sienna. Consequently, I didn't think it was the openeners themselves or the instructions from Johnson Controls or here.

Now watch carefully here. I had put the transmitter anywhere from 3" to a foot away from the visor and had no luck at all. Finally, I put the transmitter between the visor and the windshield and the unit paired immediately. Same thing with the other door opener on my wife's side of the garage. So, try putting the transmitter between the visor and the windshield and try again. At worst you'll lose 60 seconds!

Regards,
TED

This worked perfectly as stated. Thanks for the tip.

Just got mine programmed thanks to the forum. I tried most of the suggestions, but what finally worked was placing the remote between the rear view mirror and the windshield.

Incidently, instead of a standard visor-clip style remote, I pulled my keypad remote (battery powered) off the wall outside the garage and used it for programming the car. It worked fine.

Thanks again.
