My car took a pee pee yesterday.. :( pic

Heh, upper radiator hose decided to explode on me after a bout of acceleration. Luckily the dealer had my part and it is about the easiest hose you can ever change. Total time to change about 25 minutes including new coolant and bled. Why, why would BMW use plastic parts for a cooling system? Thank god it wasnt the bottom hose.. lol if you look way back you can see my trail of coolant around the building.

Just because it failed on someone else's car does not mean it's about to blow on your car. Wasted money imo.

That happened to me, too. Though it was not the hose but the upper radiator neck breaking off.

Yea that woulda really ruined my day.. luckily it was just the plastic inside the hose that broke on mine.. I think my radiator was replaced around 2 years ago according to maintenance records..

Heres' another funny thing, do you think BMW coolant is any different then other coolant? The guys at the dealer were convincing me that it was, so I ended up doin it but i feel stupid paying 15 bucks for a jug of that crap..

Maybe it prevents the cooling system from having suicidal tendencies? Haha... it's so sad

So, did part of the radiator neck break? You mention plastic and this...

No just the plastic in the radiator hose.. you can see the pic i posted with the big red arrow pointing to the crack. theres hard plastic inside the hose all the way past the clamp, because the clamp is what holds the rubber onto the the plastic connector..

That's a different kind of clamp than I'm used to. My 98 540 has this instead...

Still, it sounds like your radiator neck DID break off. Tell me if I am wrong, but part of the rad. neck snapped off. A common problem. You can temporarily fix it by clamping on to the existing part of the neck that remains, but it may just break off again.
How old is the radiator? If you are even slightly unsure of the rad. replacement, I would recommend replacing with a new one.

the factory hoses are really thin. It worries me. I had a generic hose on my car before and it was easily 3x as thick as the oem hose. Unfortunately, I put my fan into it when the motor mount ripped in half. Amazingly, the fan didn't cut through the hose and everything was fine until I received the new hose... at which point I did a double take when I saw how thin the new hose was.

I had the same problem, theres a plastic fitting that secures the hose to the neck. When I explained it to the shop on the phone while I waited for a tow they were not hopeful. They thought it was most likely the neck, and I was like "uhh, nah unless Im retarded..." And luckily they were wrong, cuz I had just had my radiator replaced!

So it is a completely different kind of connector. Thanks.
Nice drawing, too.

Well i got a hookup on wholesale price so for me it wasn't much at all, it was 25 bucks for the hose OEM from the dealer.. but even if you would have ordered it OEM through an independent it was like 37 dollars (i went to an indy first cause it was closer to where it happened, but they didnt have it in stock)
