Car runs cold in winter
My wife's car (the 525i) seems to take forever to warm up (any season), but especially in the winter - and it hardly gets above the 11:30'-ish mark.
Should I suspect a lazy temp sensor? Or go ahead and pull the t-stat housing to make sure I have a thermostat? =) I have not heard of a failed thermostat sticking open; is this possible, too? I guess they normally stick closed and cause overheating. edit: corrected because my clock analogy was way off. It hovers near or just above the hash mark to the left of noon.

I will second that it's a broken (open) thermostat that's causing it. A thermostat that is stuck open makes the waterflow to be very high, which causes the engine to run cooler, and that's why it can take forever to get hot air inside.
And yes, a thermostat can be stuck open or closed when it's broken!

Make any difference on the 88C or the 92C thermostats? I'll get this done in the next week or two.
So the stuck/broken thermostat could actually keep it from ever quite getting up to temp?

I'm not sure if it's by design but it seems that a lot of us with e34's have experienced stuck open thermostats. I'd start with the 'stat and go from there.

88C is a "summer"thermostat and 92C is a winter thermostat.
But you can use any of them as you like any time of the year. The benefit with a 92C thermostat on the winter is that you get warmer air in the car faster, usualy you have a 88C thermostat in the car though. A broken thermostat will give you no hot air as the waterflow is at max all the time, and even higher when you're driving (faster rpm's on the waterpump)= cools more. So you usualy end up never coming up to the middle line on the temp gauge as the temp won't go up there thanks to that.. So yes on your question!

I replaced the stat and the cars runs up to its proper temp now =) I could not see any visible defects in the one I removed - but the new one fixed the problem.
Thanks all!

If you feel like checking it for shits and giggles drop the old tstat in a pot of boiling water (or in the temp range) and see if it opens.
