just saying

is it just me or is 535i 5spd a good bang for buck.. within the e34 5series i mean i have a less than healthy m30 b35 and that thing puts out the power im consistently pleased with the power. with a few mods im sure they really move. anybody wanna chime in on this can i hear from somebody with a perfect 535i. and im figuring e34 performance is as follows
m5
540
535/530?
525
also which do you all think is faster 535i or 530 i know they are really close in hp any thoughts
really just shooting the breeze

Right now, my VW GTI can beat my E34 535i in reverse.

Since I have an auto and the cars runs like crap, I'm unable to enjoy any spirited driving. I'm hoping the kid up the street will trade me for his stock E30 318i coupe. He wants $600 for it, so I may have to give him money on top of my trade.

I really love my 535i/5. The only cars I can really compare it to are the E90 325i and my dad's E85 Z4 3.0. Although the 535i/5 is not fast, it is really fun to drive, and I rev the hell out it. I always keep it above 2k RPM, and sometimes just leave it cruising at 4.5k for a while instead of shifting so I can punch it and get that extra bit of responsiveness.

I drove in Grey/eaglecomm's 540i/6, and the difference is huge. I love driving my car, but I would never say that it was fast. As long as there is no car near me as a reference point to make me feel slow, loving to drive a slow car is as good as loving to drive a fast car.

The most insightful thing I've read today.

I love my 535i. It's an auto, but it's a great car. I can keep up with who I want to, when I want to.

My 540iA doesn't feel that fast off the line, but above 60 it feels like it really pulls.

An E34 is awesome bang for the buck. Name another sub-$10K RWD car available with a manual transmission that's large enough to seat 5, can do a power slide through a roundabout and doesn't look out of place parked among the high-end cars at a nice hotel? Except for an E39 or super clean E28, that is.

For me, a modern V8 or crazy turbo 4/6-cyl is fun for about 5 minutes until you realize you're going to get yourself arrested or killed if you tap in to that power for more than 5 consecutive seconds. It's completely pointless if you're no longer dumb enough to race people at stoplights. New cars handle so frickin' cleanly, too. They feel dead until you're at 10/10ths. No fun at all.

my auto 535 seems like good bang for the buck, considering I paid less than 500 for it...

I remember reading an article at the doctor's office in some auto magazine where the author was talking about a hard drive up a mountain in an older car, it might have even been an e30 318. He said his friend had a quicker car, and beat him up. By the time the author got up there, he said his car was smoking and about to die on him, but he had had a much better time getting there than his friend.

It reminded me of my car.

I love my 535i/5. Drove it last night after getting out of my E39 525iT and nothing feels like the E34 driving experience!

I sold my AMG E55 and kept my 535M as the toy/spare car.. The BMW is user, parts and mod friendly and doesn't feel like a big boat like the merc did. The torque was nice but other cons were to great. Pocketed the cash and let somebody else have the headaches of dealing with MB of Oklahoma City for parts.

Yup, I"ll take a small, underpowered car over a super fast car any day. I could drive my Alfa at 7/10 all day long, have a blast, and never do anything illegal.

It's the old expression "it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow." That's why I love driving low HP cars like a 318is or a Miata. You can wring them out over and over and not be doing triple digits.

I would kind of disagree if some say that the 535 is kind of slow. Well, i have never driven a 525 or a 530 or 540, but to me the 535 pulls like hell. Even with an auto and being in 3rd gear around 4500-5500, the car pulls bloody hard. I had a nissan sylvia in my tail and it just couldnt catch up.

The thing i love the most with the auto is the kickdown.

For instance, paying the toll gate and just starting to glide, car shifts in 2nd, then 3rd.....you then push the S button with your finger, and move your left hand back to the steering wheel. Both hands gripping hard then waiting for cars in front of you to clear off a bit while we still slowly glide around 60km/h........then..............................WHAMMMM !!!! you punch the hell out of the gas pedal and feel that kickdown 'click' on your foot. RPM then jumps to 6000 and suddenly your already running 100km/h and quickly going faster...Damn! It's a very good feeling!!
