| 1991 - 1999 (E36) (1991 - 1999) The first modern 3 Series, the E36, was the model that paved the way for the 3 Series to be named "Car of the Year" every year since the model was driving off showroom floors. Radically redesigned in 1992, the E36 was not the same 3 Series as the E21 and E30. Larger, less boxy in design, and equipped with a dual overhead cam engine, multilink rear suspension, and a more finished interior, the E36 balances sport with luxury. |

secondary air system 99 323is
Somebody asked me to diagnose a few things on his car. CEL is on - dunno what codes b/c my scanner is 500 miles from here, but I would suspect secondary air system among other things based on what I see. I notice that the secondary air pump doesn't run when the car is cold (and I know it should). But I also notice that I can hear exhaust noise when I put my ear to the pump, and I also notice it after the car has been warmed up. In addition to the pump housing being pretty hot, I notice that I can smell exhaust.
My thinking is that that valve about halfway up the valve cover must be malfunctioning and allowing exhaust gases to go the wrong direction. What else could cause that besides a faulty valve? I know the air pump is probably bad also, but I think it'd be a good idea to stop the exhaust gas problem before he fries a new pump.
