There is a special tool, and it is not "required", just makes things easy. The special tool will help keep the engine from turning when trying to loosen the fan's large nut. However, if you get the wrench and it has a long handle, you can knock it loose with a large mallet.

The wrench is 32mm (36mm is for the oil filter lid). I think. Maybe I'm mis-remembering. Yeah, I don't know, I always get 'em mixed up.

Anyway, if the sharp smack with the hammer doesn't work, you can wedge a big screwdriver between the fan pulley bolts, to counter-hold the pulley. Not an elegant solution, but it worked for me.

Or, apply reverse tension to the tensioner pulley to prevent pulley rotation....while someone, loosens the fan

32mm...Nathan is correct...

I did the oil filter housing gasket yesterday and got away without removing the fan. Not sure if you'll have to on yours - mine is the clutchless type.

I have a 2003 330i in a manual. I've read that on the older ones the fan drive is attached to the water pump or some shit. Don't know, but you might be able to get around it.

What I did was basically stick a ratchet into the belt tensioner and attach a long pipe from my jack to the ratchet to use as a cheater bar. Worked like a charm and belt slipped right off.
