| 1999 - 2005 (E46) (1999 - 2005) Starting in 1999 the E46 3 Series picked up where the E36 left off. Larger, with smoother lines, and with more advanced engines than its predecessor, the E46 easily held the title of "Best Car of the Year" throughout its life. |

Air filter on a 2001 325i
Hi Everyone,
I've had my 2001 325i for about 4 years now and I've never changed any air filters on it. But now that winter is coming back I started to turn the heat on a couple of times and there is a pretty strong dusty smell coming out each time now. I figure it must be related to the air filter? Since I'm no expert here by any means, I was wondering if you guys can explain to me the following: 1) Where are the air filters located for the AC/Heat in the car? 2) How many are there that need to be changed? 3) Can this be done manually or is a mechanic required? 4) Where can I buy it (I assume from the BMW dealership). Thanks a lot! BL |

Air Filter (Part # 13-72-1-744-869) Microfilter a.k.a.Cabin Air Filter (Part # 64-31-1-000-004 OR 64-31-9-071-935) http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/cata...aintenance.htm It should take you all of 10-15 minutes to do both. DIY's: http://www.bmw330ci.net/maintenance/cabinfilter.php The air filter is in the black box on the right hand side, just behind the radiator. Just lift the clips to remove the cover. Install the new filter and re-clip. Here's a link to a picture: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...06&hg=13&fg=20 Also, while your in there, clean your Mass Airflow Sensor. Specifically in your situation, I'd first replace the Microfilter using the info in golforcars post. The other air filter is the filter for the air entering your engine, which should also be changed regularly as part of normal maintenance. But in your case, the Microfilter you'll definitely want to change. It is very very easy, no tools but your fingers are needed.
