Z3 (E36/7, E36/8) (1996 - 2002) In 1996 BMW added the Z3 to the lineup. First available only with the 1.9 liter engine, the Z3 went on to carry every 6 cylinder produced between 1996 and 2002. A fun, sporty little 2 seater came both in convertible and coupe form. Being a bit of a “parts bin” car, the Z3 is part E30, part E36, but all original.

You Know You're Making Decent Power When ...

... You create a pretzel out of your driveshaft.

No slicks needed ... just street tires and torque.

LOL ... hopefully nothing else broke. I won't be able to confirm until I get another drive shaft in there.

Think I should hang it on my garage wall as a trophy?

No idea on replacement yet. Just like everything else on the car, it's probably going to be custom and heavy duty.

Once you go FI, things like driveshafts and axels become expendable and replaceable items, just like a clutch.

For sure! I was expecting the half shafts to bite the dust first ... but the driveshaft proved to be the weaksauce.

That's disconcerting, only 60 or so more ft lbs of torque than the s54...

That's what happens when you go to the drag strip and do a few good launches. You have to figure that the stress on those parts at launch on the drag strip is at least double what can be had on the street.

Hope you can engineer a solution to this one. It's funny the guibo looks fine though.

At that point, they're considered fusible links...

Umm ... no.

The s54 makes around 260 ft. lb. of torque at the engine. I'm making around 450 ft. lb. at the engine.

There's ABSOLUTELY no comparison.

Maybe / maybe not. The car sees many hard launches autocrossing, etc. Sure, VHT does a great job, however, I'm usually on slicks when doing most other launches.

Guibo is only 3k mi old. Car doesn't get driven nearly enough.

I was launching at the strip ~2500 rpm to prevent wheel hop. It didn't work.

Maybe you should learn how to slip the clutch more.

It broke while slipping it ... HA HA HA

And I will not abuse my car and continue slipping it through first, second, and third (yes, I lose traction in third). If I wanted slippage, I'd get an automatic.

This felt to be the smoothest, most predictable launch all day. I think I finally hooked properly. The car lifted perfectly but didn't move. I actually didn't even set off the tree.

I was there! I was a couple cars back in the lane and when I saw Jonathan and a couple guys pushing his car back my stomach went up into my throat. Thankfully it is just the driveshaft.

The reality is that Jonathan was upset because I raped him out of the hole by 4 cls...........and then he massacred by the end of the track ahahaha.

Seriously though, it is very hard to launch when you have as much HP as Jonathan does. I really do think if his car can run high 11's with some good tires. Also, Jonathans clutch is VERY hard to slip, so it's not as easy to launch compared to a car like mine. I can launch my car at 4500rpms and slip the clutch a little and go full throttle immediately. If Jonathan did that with his car his drivetrain would shatter ahahaha.

That's a very generous estimate, how did you come up with that?
There maybe something else wrong with the balance or rear subframe. There are a lot guys making a ton more torque than you with no ds problems. For saftey reasons give your car a good looking over.
