| 1999 - 2005 (E46) (1999 - 2005) Starting in 1999 the E46 3 Series picked up where the E36 left off. Larger, with smoother lines, and with more advanced engines than its predecessor, the E46 easily held the title of "Best Car of the Year" throughout its life. |

Hello,
I am new to this forum and I have a 2002 330i BMW. Yesterday, I had to replace my key and re-programmed it. Today, I was driving at dusk time and I noticed that the dash board lights as well as my headlights are not coming back on. Is this a problem with re-programming my new key that I did last night or is this another problem that is causing my headlights to not go on at night time. Please help! When I turn the knob to my brights, the lights on the dash and my bright head lights do turn on, but when I turn the knob back to the regular setting, they lights do not turn on. I don't want to drive with my brights on at night and I cannot drive without any lights at all. Anyone have a solution? thanks, Shari |

Something else is wrong. Also, technically, you're in the wrong forum.

The lights coming on at dusk is not a function of the key, it's a function of turning the headlight switch to the "A"(Auto) position.
You don't "turn the knob" to get your brights to come on, you push the turn signal stalk forward. When you turn the knob you are either turning on the lights manually, or you're putting the light switch in the "A" (Auto) setting. So when you say "When I turn the knob to my brights, the lights on the dash and my bright head lights do turn on, but when I turn the knob back to the regular setting, they lights do not turn on.", it's confusing. Turning the headlight switch to the right will make the headlights come on regardless of the outside lighting. Turning the knob to the left will put it in the Auto setting and the lights should come on when it gets dark. Pulling the turn signal stalk towards you momentarily activates your brights but doesn't turn on the dash lights (except the little blue icon), and pushing the turn signal stalk away from you turns on the brights manually and they stay on till you turn them off.

Any advice I may give here is - at best - tongue-in-cheek, and just as likely outright offensive. I've been doing this for a long time and I usually have a pretty good idea of that which I speak - but not always. So break out your grain of salt and try to keep up.
