| 1991 - 1999 (E36) (1991 - 1999) The first modern 3 Series, the E36, was the model that paved the way for the 3 Series to be named "Car of the Year" every year since the model was driving off showroom floors. Radically redesigned in 1992, the E36 was not the same 3 Series as the E21 and E30. Larger, less boxy in design, and equipped with a dual overhead cam engine, multilink rear suspension, and a more finished interior, the E36 balances sport with luxury. |

Good deal, or not?
So I'm looking to buy an E36, and after months of searching I'm getting pretty desperate, especially considering that I don't have a car and need to hitch a ride to get everywhere (school, work, etc).
So I am looking at a 96 328i, 120,000 miles, A/T (not an issue for me), and from the pictures it looks pretty clean. The owner is asking for $4500. I was just wondering if this is a good price to pay for a car like this, or if I'd just be getting ripped off? Thanks! |

No a bad price. If you are worried get a carfax - make sure the interior in good condition especially the door panels - You might consider taking it to a Mechanic you trust and ask him to do a compression check. Ask him to look it all over and give you an opinion. Two months ago I bought a 1994 325i for $2500. I have put 1500 in it and I am not done yet!
There is a classified section on this forum you might check for a car too! Last edited by paulrhein; 11-22-2009 at 07:53 PM.. |

it would need to be super clean at this price w/ no flaws and a perfect carfax. that A/T is something of a time bomb at that mileage. check for the usual issues like cooling and suspension. It could need alot of work if the PO hasn't kept it up to snuff.

Seems to be a reasonable price. Take it to a mechanic you trust with foreign cars before you buy it to make sure everything is in working order, or that you are aware of any issues it might have.

I found a 95 325is near me with a pushed in nose panel, guy wants 2k and says maintenance is up to date etc. I drove it and it pulls hard, but after looking around even 2k for a car that needs a little body work isn't much of a deal after it's fixed..
Keep looking op, craigslist is your friend.

Looks nice, at that price I would want everything in good shape ... no warning lights (CEL, ABS, SRS) the cooling system ($350 parts) and the suspension bushings/struts ($600+ parts) with recent rebuilds. If not already done it needs those now. (minimum double those parts prices if paying shops to do). I also would want at least 50% on brake pads/rotors and tires.
Get a ppi, factor in costs for anything identified and make an offer.
