Question Flashing SRS light

After starting, the SRS light will flash for a couple of minutes and then stay on. The previous owner and his well respected mechanic assured me that the airbag system was working and intact.

I'm not sure why they could not clear the light but maybe you can help me do this? I'm hoping its not unlike a manual oil change reset.

Thanks!

Check to see if your local BMWCCA chapter has a toolbox with a Peake code reader/reset for airbags. That's how I reset mine and hasn't given me any more trouble.

Thanks! I have a simple Oil/Service resetter. A proper Peake device looks to be about $140. Are there any deals to be had on these?

I bet the PO had the airbag out at some point, then turned the ignition on. That's how mine came on. I paid an indy $10 to reset it. Took like 3 mins for him with his scanner looking thing.

I don't believe you can reset the E34 airbag lights with the Peake unit.

Peake SRS/Airbag reset tool does not work on your E34 1990, according to Peake hompage it works on BMW built from 1994!

I have a cheaper tool which works on your E34 and even has more functions such as airbag/SRS/inspection/oil service and annual inspection for $85.00 for sale, plenty on stock.

SIR3 http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1327548

This device is for resetting BMW models built from 1987 - 2003 with a 20 pins plug interface; WITHOUT can bus.

Works on the following models:
3-series E30, 3-series E36, 3-series E46, 5-series E34, 5-series E39,
7-series E32, 7-series E38, X5, Z3 E53, Z8,

Monitored by a micro-processor the SIR3 digital resetter resets the service interval display according to the manufacturer's specifications - Delete function of airbag control light in instrument. Use in every BMW-car with round 20-pole BMW-Service socket. Reset function of Service Interval, Airbag control light and Brake fluid control light/annual inspection (where applicable, country specification).
Measurement: 65mm x 40mm Diameter
Technical Details: Operating Voltage: 12VDC
Current consumption: 30 mA, Temperature range: -10/+40 °C
Protection class: IP 67, Operation: Foil keyboard
Connection: 20-pole round Service socket

Note: the SRS system on your BMW needs to be functioning properly in order to reset the SRS light. If the system detects a fault on any of the systems sensors a reset without replacement/repair of those failed components is not possible. The unit does not scan faults, it resets the warning light. Comes with complete instructions.

Price including non-insured shipping SAL : US $ 85.00
Price in case EMS with tracking is prefered: US $ 95.00

Payment: by Paypal

The peake srs reset tool will only work on 94 and newer, i bought one and it would not work on 89,90 and 91 that i tried it on.. Then peake changed their website to read 94 and up.. I called them and they agreed that it wouldn't work and refunded my money.Bill R. mentioned this already in 2005
http://www.bimmernut.com/forum/showt...&highlight=SRS

if it is on for about 5 minutes only:

Bill R. mentioned some time ago: quote

If you look at service bulletin 720496 youll see it. Its caused by a broken or damaged circuit board in either the drivers side seat belt latch or the passengers side. If you have code 24 its the drivers side if you have fault code 25 its the passenger side, either way it goes into the default mode which is to trigger both bags in the event of an accident.
IF the system is functioning normally then the seat belt sensors detect if you have a passenger in the car and will turn that bag on or off which would save some money if nobodies on that side then you don't need to trigger the passenger bag.

It affects all models with the ZAE airbag system, e34e36,e38,e31 as of production date 3/94

Shogun, That looks great. I've seen other items you've made such as the illuminated Auto Shift indicator. Do you have a site with all of your items listed and a way to purchase? Please im me if this request is against the forum rules.

iluminated gear shifter (I only need info what the transmission is, such as P-R-N-4-3-2-1 or whatever, that is for the black cover plate, the module identifies the transmission automatically and lights the correct LEDs).
installation instructions from the German 7-forum

interior light dimmer
installation instructions German 7-forum http://www.7-forum.com/forum/24/dimm...ung-82846.html

SRS/airbag/oil/inspection reset tool (all in one) under for sale here

outer door handle gaskets, better than the ones offered on the Bay, see here

in case you are interested in the iluminated gear shifter module or the interior light dimmer,
send me a PM with your location/state/country and if you want it by airmail (non registered) or EMS with tracking, and I can give you the prices. EMS with tracking is more expensive and/but faster.
Will reply within 1 day. Remember we have a big time difference between Asia and your country.

that is what Peake says: quote

What is the SRS light trying to tell me?
The BMW SRS light can mean any number of things from serious to minor. Sometimes it's alerting you to the real need for a repair of a broken part, but sometimes it is merely indicating that a circuit critical to proper SRS operation was temporarily disconnected (i.e. while you were installing a stereo, alarm, racing seat or steering wheel).

Does Peake Research make an airbag/SRS tool for BMWs built prior to 1994? Unfortunately, we do not offer an SRS tool for BMWs made prior to 1994.

unquote

therefore, for E34 and E32, E30 etc. the SRS reset tool choice is the one I am selling, as it works on our older cars

A SRS light that remains on means there is a fault code. It could also mean that the SRS will not deploy the airbags in the event of an accident.
