Hope this helps....

Fellas/ Ladies...

While waiting on my nuts(go ahead laugh now) to be delivered i checked maximillian about my driveshaft components and realized im missing a part...

24VIBRATION DAMPER23131220589

Now i know the german gurus put a damper here for a reason... Why was it removed? idk... but i remembered the 525 @ pull apart(pap) had 1 so off i went to pap and got it..I'll put it on when I change out the fd and cb.... Anyone else have the damper or not?

Listed price: a wopping $210 @ ultimategarage
rmeuropean $203, oem @ $220
@ pap $10 used

What should i inspect the damper for after cleanup?
Just read this....
http://www.bimmernut.com/forum/archi...p/t-11770.html

Wish me luck and thanks for the feedback!!!

I think people have just been tossing the balancer on re-installation of the guibo. Caused more problems than it solved, IIRC.

Haven't seen a 525i with anything but a flex disc.

I think they tossed them because of the lack of room when removing a FD. If you lower the transmission 1st then theirs access to these nuts. When i removed it the fd on the 525 had cracks in it but no hairy fd's like some of us showed plus it appeared as though it was there for a while.

I think to ease the constant revolutions on the flex disc the engineers aided the flex disc with a harmonic balancer... the harmonic balancer uses 3 bolts while the flex disc uses 3 instead of having all bolts applied to the flex disc..
this in turn balances out!!!

I've never seen one of these on any 535i, 735i, 530i, or 525i.

I've personally seen at LEAST 4 E34's without this underneath, and at least 3 E32's.

So far its not looking good... i think i'll call the dealership tomorrow and ask questions about the harmonic balancer not being on our cars since its suppose to be...

3 without...
1 with....

Whos's next?

The question is: Who's willing to shell out $200 for a new harmonic balancer?

Now that you said it it makes the harmonic balancer even rarer.. I'll call more than 1 dealer 2moro and grill them about the balancer..

they are def. rare... have seen probably 1 or 2 out of the 5 dozen 5'ers and 7'ers i've been under.

i wouldn't even use one, as a properly balanced and preloaded shaft with a good u joint/ guibo/ center bearing shouldn't vibrate.

The e30 (5 speed) has one, but the e30 that donated the DS for mine didn't. They were 3 production months apart. I have not seen one on any of my 3 e34's. 1 5 speed and 2 auto's.
