1999 - 2005 (E46) (1999 - 2005) Starting in 1999 the E46 3 Series picked up where the E36 left off. Larger, with smoother lines, and with more advanced engines than its predecessor, the E46 easily held the title of "Best Car of the Year" throughout its life.

Exclamation Finally got my CCV done...but I still have questions

Hey all, here is my story.
Scroll to the end for cliffs.

So I got out relatively early today from work (3pm) and decided to start on my CCV valve replacement. I found a DIY on bimmerfest that was well written and documented. It all went mostly smooth (a few minor hiccups, mostly ergomic issues). I was going to leave it until Sunday to finish but my wife isn't all about taking me to work in the morning while the bimmer sits in the garage. Anyway...after I buttoned everything up I started it up to make sure all was well...

It still spit out a cloud of smoke and it makes a loud knocking sound when I first start it (I was in the garage with the hood open), idle was a little rough too.

Is this just residual from driving it while the old one was bad? I'd hate to think it's something else wrong.

I did a little cleaning while I had it apart too, maybe something there could be causing it, if it's not a residual thing. MAF, ICV, Throttle Body all got a good cleaning. ICV was CAKED with carbon and funk.

The CCV itself fell apart, literally, when I went to pull it out, it cracked in half on me. The hoses were all pretty brittle too, with the exception of the hose going back to the dipstick tube.

Cliffs:
Replaced CCV, cleaned MAF, Throttle body and ICV while at it. Started it up to check, still ticked loudly (in garage with hood open), idled rough, spit out smoke. Residual from old CCV?
Note: All wires and previous connections were cleaned as well and double checked before bolting.

Humm that sounds pretty bad if you ask me. Might be the vanos seals. My car idles pretty rough when I first start it up and the rpms have a tendacy to drop to about 300 or less and then jump up to 1200. Those are typical signs that the vanos seals are on there way out the door.

If you have any of those symptoms check out besian.com (I think that's how it's spelt) and they have all the parts you'll need with the procedure and the symptoms.

Cliffs not needed. The smoke/knock/rough idle was from Gunk that was built up in the ICV and throttle body. Chances are some of it found its way into the intake... No big deal, I would run Seafoam through the intake manifold while you are at it... That cleaned out my intake fabulously and my car feels peppier and my idle smoothed out a little.
