Hello,
I am new to the group. I just was blessed with a 1991 BMW 525I. It has 110k, but yesterday I gunked the engine and it started to run bad (miss) I let it set over night and drove it this morning to find out that it throw a code and the engine light is now on. I found out that my #6 coil was filled with water, so I cleaned it out and reinserted, but i still have a miss.... Can anyone let me know what odb is need to read the code and where is the plug? Thanks Jose |

ODB is in the grave unfortunately. RIP
. But OBD on the E34 is OBD 1 IIRC. To pull the code you need a tool or you can do the stomp test: http://www.bmwe34.net/Wiki/tiki-inde...e=Engine+codes Follow the directions and you should be good to go. May take a few tries but it will work.

Just number 6? I would double check that all the plug holes are free of water. Once you do the stomp test, it will probably kick you a generic 'engine misfire' code...
Don't gunk your engine bay...or use a hose...I use a rag with a little engine dressing to clean. Removes the crap, leaves a nice shine.

Thanks for the replies, The only cylinder that had water was #6 all others were fine. I want to thank GarrettSR5 for the stomp test info and I did it - no codes, but still a miss.
is it common to fry an ignition coil if the cylinder gets wet? |

I bet if it was shorted out it could be fried. Best bet is to pull it off and check resistance.

Depends how soon you started the car after you washed the motor. If it wasn't enough time to let the water evaporate or dissipate, then it probably could have fried the coil with enough water. Also pull the coils and make sure the spark tubes are dry. The spark tubes are the rubber tubes that connect the coil to the spark plug...if #6 was full of water, it would make sense to have water up the tube too.

If your looking to the computer for specific codes your going to be let down, OBD1 cars don't give you very good information. It will tell you that you have a missfire...... well, you know that. It's OBD2 that gives you the specific cylinder to check and whatnot, that didn't happen till 96 or 97. Your best bet is to to back and take your time drying each coil and tube to make sure its all right. I've had times where it had to sit overnight before it would run 100% right again.
Oh yeah, RIP to the ODB..... Last edited by quick93; 11-20-2009 at 05:59 PM.. Reason: Forgot my tribute to ODB!!! |

Thanks for all you help.
A small amount of time has passed and things are heating up-
The miss has gone away. but now the idle is bouncing between 700 and 900 when I am at a stop. No clue?? This just gets to me more fun as the days pass. |
