Got Traction Control?

Hey all, Noob to BMWs here. I've been looking for a reasonably priced 90's BMW 5 series for a bit now. One thing I haven't found out is how to tell if the car has traction control. Is there an easy way to tell if the car has traction control or posi type rear end versus the standard open differential?

There is a button under the ashtray.
It says ASC.

I'M not sure, but I think it was common on the '94's and '95's.

Oh OK, thanks PorscheDude, so if it has the button it has a posi-traction type axle and if there's no button then it's probably a open differential.

OK, so is there any way to tell if a car's got a posi rear end? Like on Ford's if the axle code is 2 numbers it's open and if it's there's a letter in with it that means it has posi-traction, or whatever Ford called it at the time.

For the LS unit there will be an S on the case underneath the grime. A later car won't have it from the factory, they stopped around '92/'93

You can look at the metal tag attached to the final drive unit. If it starts with a 'S' (ex. S 373) then it has a limited slip differential. There isn't a way to tell without getting under the car, and most of them (especially since TC migrated into the cars) don't have a LSD.

WOW great info! So I'm guessing if is says S 373 it means there's a 3.73 geared limited slip differential under the car?

What would a 1995 regular 540I with a 6-speed likely have for traction control if any?

Not sure I get what you mean here.

It would have BMW's ASC for traction control. Not much else there unless you want the tech specs

Yea there is, you can call the dealer and give them your serial number and they can tell you. Or there are members on here who can do the same

Perhaps, but the unit could have been replaced/swapped. I had that happen once.

OK sorry. I assumed the 373 on the metal tag would mean it had 3.73:1 ratio gears in it, which apparently is not the case.

No, that is correct. The tag will indicate which ration is in the case.
