97 328is vs eclipse

On my way home after dropping my girlfriend home and i see this eclispe. First glance i was like ok no big deal ill give him what he deserves. We line up at 80 im in 4th at 3500rpm and i hear him drop a gear. When we take off i hear his snail spool and i got caught with my pants down all the way to 130 he pulled 2 car lengths on me. I'm not sure what year eclispe maybe mid 90s with what looked to be a supra tt spoiler. Car was quick gave him thumbs up and got off my exit.

cliff notes: eclipse pulls 2 cls from 80-130

my mods- m3 diff CAI, exhaust, m50 manifold and software

I love the elitist attitude around here, especially from the e36 crowd.

I'm glad you really showed that POS ricer.

Well he does LOVE his car, so understandable the proud stature. It would have been interesting to know what mods the Eclipse driver had done, guessing something based on the outcome.

Big Beans must have a blast in his Diamond Star with that kind of power.

The specs on the GS-T (front wheel drive) are 14.9@92, so it wouldn't take much to put 2 cars on the OP from 80-130. (80-130 time is 39 seconds )

The AWD is heavier and has a lot more drivetrain loss, but i'm sure basic bolt-ons is all it would need.

The most basic turbo upgrades are 16g turbos from the Evo III, but a car with a 16g and bolt-ons should pull much harder than the car the OP ran. No one really makes less than 250whp with those.

My guess would be that it was a fairly stock car, maybe an intake/exhaust GSX.

As for mine...im having fuel delivery problems so i'm on low boost (370whp) until i have time/money to get things sorted out. Still very fun

Agreed.

Love my Car --- Didn't you also remove 200lbs from it? Wanting to help ya out, did yours come with ASC and if so, do you still have it installed? Reason I ask, I noticed that many folks were going the CAI path w/M50 manifold, but still leaving the ASC installed, which would negate much of the mod gains.

yea i still have ASC in and i had to put my iinterior back in. If the juust had an intake and exhaut then the stock turbo is really loud haha i heard his turbo over my radio blasting, car at 3500 and my window down 2 inchs, and i didnt know they came with a BOV stock either.

Stock turbos on most cars get kind of loud with intake/exhaust. My friend has a mazdaspeed 3 and i can hear his stock turbo spool at 80mph on the highway when he's in the other lane about 3-4 cars back.

Once you get to a turbo with a true 4" intake (GT3076R or larger), they get seriously loud. 3" or less sounds like a whistle by comparison. I've been told by friends that they could hear me spool when they were 6-8 car lengths ahead on the highway...maybe that's why some guy in a new camaro wouldn't run when i decided to taunt him a little.

The BOV comment is interesting. The stock system uses a mass air meter before the turbo, along with a recirculating bypass valve.

A vent to atmosphere type blow off valve is a huge no-no on a stock setup, because it discharges air that the ECU thinks is going into the engine, which causes it to go rich and possibly stumble on the shifts.

I don't think there's a good way to tune for this, which means he is either running a setup like mine, with a GM blow through MAF and a translator box in the cold side of the IC piping (and downstream of the BOV), or he's an idiot (much more likely).

I'm not going to lie im a HUGE FI noob so i had no idea about the stock turbo sound. Maybe im just an idiot and confused the wastegate sound to a BOV sound. I think that is likely to since i am a newbie

Internal gates are plumbed into the exhaust so there is no change in sound when they open. He wouldn't have an external gate unless he was running a much more serious setup, and the sound is very noticeable.

He's a dyno vid of my car. There is no BOV noise in this vid. You'll hear the wastegate open at 0:26

Btw, the camera couldn't record the turbo noise.

This is with big fuel system issues causing one cylinder to run rich and one to run lean. Very little timing, and 10.8 overall A/F ratio. I've since upped the boost a touch, so i'm prob at 370 or so until i get it sorted out.

God I need to start putting my car back together. I have a new block and pistons done by Ffwd connection thats been sitting here in my hse for 3yrs covered. Also a brandnew HX40 sitting here as well. Alot of these guys here sleep on DSM's.

I still have a tough decision as to whether I should turbocharge my M3 or just continue my DSM project Would love to do them both but . Lack of funds just drives me Loco! Are u on DSMtuners.com?

Yes, I'm BigBeans on DSMtuners.

What are some of the details on your car?

When i dyno'd i had 1 cylinder rich and 1 lean. I was running NO timing (I'd have to look at a log, but it was about 10 degrees) and i was flirting with knock at 20psi. With the fuel system sorted, i'll be able to run a lot more boost with the same timing and fuel curves.

Cliff notes on my setup are:

Ross/Eagle 6 Bolt
Ported head w/ big valves
HKS 264/272 cams (soon to be upgraded)
FP Race manifold
FP 3052 w/ Tial 44 Gate and Tial BOV
GM MAF/MAFT
Buschur FMIC
Buschur Catless 3" TBE.
Wally 255HP, STM tank->rail kit, PTE 880cc injectors

Built trans, full suspension, and 3000GT VR-4 brakes.

I'll be picking up a JMF "Race" model sheet metal intake manifold and a set of GSC S2 cams in the spring, then hopefully getting a 10 second slip.

Nice!

My present setup is:

ported and polished head with 1mm oversized valves

HKS cams 264/272 with kibble white dual valve springs and titanium retainers

T3/T4 turbonetic's exh mani ported with tial 38mm wategate, tial BOV

Stck portd 1g int mani with 1g throttle body

60 trim t3/t4 garret turbo which compressor surges like a bastard(hate this turbo)

AEM standalone

3" custom built holeshot perf exh

spearco FMIC

Wally 255, -8 braided fuel line -6 return, custom fuel rail with aero fuel press reg,660 denso inj

1g 6bolt refreshened with new stck 2g pistons 9k miles now

stck trans ,act 2600,Baer brakes

full susp with susp tech bushings all around.

The garbage turbo that I have is severly holding my car back now along with the intercooler I believe. She heat soaks pretty bad on consistant runs in the summer.

I have a new cryoed blue printed blck with, butcher crank, Crower rods and Ross pistons waiting to be dropped in.
Looking to go with a Bushur FMIC,twin scroll mani and Holset HX40 turbo.

I also have a stock, but heavily ported 1G intake manifold, and it really isn't flowing enough anymore.

Same story with the cams. These 264/272s were great with a small intake mani and a 16G, but making peak power at 6k isn't really the goal anymore. My torque falls off hard after 6k, so i need to open things up a bit.

You'd probably get a good gain from a JMF piece. Also, the 660cc injectors have to be close to maxed out. I know im over 75% of my 880's @ 370whp, but then again that was on a stock fuel line.

The buschur FMIC is pricey as i'm sure you know, but it really is a great piece.

Good luck!

When I go with the HX40 I will be using a set of 950's I purchased. You definitely need to go with the bigger fuel lines. I knew that down the line I was gonna go with a bigger turb so I went ahead and upgraded my fuel system. I'm gonna stick with the hks bump sticks I have for now along with the 1 g intake.
The exh mani will go along with the, stck block, turbo and fmic. These items will all be upgraded as I try to reach my quest for 550awhp.

That Buschur FMIC is gd but expensive in a crazee way. I keep jumpin in and out of decision about it. Tempted to go with the ETS Race 4" FMIC .

I d love to do my M3 but it will cost me about 8k to turbocharge. I gotta get furniture for my house first sans the Wife! She'd kill me!

The M3 would more remind me of a Supra TT power wise and topend. After I drove in a ICS turbocharged MZ3 I was thoroughly convinced. It was the fastest car I have ever driven in,in my life!

The ETS is a good unit also.

My tasks for the day are snow removal, and fuel system work.
In a couple of days when the roads clear i'll turn up the boost and see how far i can get on these cams/intake.

Good luck bro and looking forward to seeing how you've progressed. I'll see ya around DSM tuners.
