Might be heading to the 5 side :P

Hey everyone!
I finally might be heading over the the 5 series side. I have always wanted a 5 series over any of the other bmw series. I found one the other day when i was getting my 740il checked. The guy who was fixing it had a 1999 BMW 528i, white, automatic tranny, all that good stuff. I wish it was a manual but meh, i need a car that gets 25 mpg and above. The only problem is that the passengers side rear end was hit pretty bad. He said he would sell me the car for $3k and fix everything for $1500! I thought that was a good deal considering it only has 152,000! (pretty good compared to my daily driver 1989 750il with 285k on it) I really want this car, mostly because it has great gas mileage and its a beautiful car! Tell me some storys about how great these cars are and tell me the bad if you have those too! Thanks!

They are alot like ladies...
They can be needy and cost some $$$, but can be well worth the effort.
99 528? I believe that is a dual vanos.. I just replaced my vanos unit because it gave me trouble. Vanos issues can be problematic, but that is a great price and i don't think it's a total deal breaker.

Does he have service records for it?

Nothing particularly wrong with my 528i besides normal maintenance. You'll be really really happy with one. Good luck!

To be honest I don't know if I would buy it. These cars can be found cheaper and cheaper nowadays especially a 528iA with almost 160k. I bet you could find one with similar or less miles that wasn't in an accident for around the same price or a little more. I don't know any car that was in a pretty bad accident seem to never be the same, and the quality of the work may be diminished if hes cutting you a break on it. Just little things to keep in mind.

As for the car I LOVE my e39. such a sweet car, and the inline 6 motor is bulletproof and purrs like a kitten, with proper coolant system maintenance it will run forever and some and gas is pretty good.

*insert obligatory 540i/6 comment here*

you'll love it though, good choice! pics of damaged rear end? for $1500 in repairs it doesn't seem like it could be that bad.

$4500 is reasonable for any E39 as far as I am concerned. I say go for it!

errr 25mpg and above? according to fueleconomy.gov: 16 city 24hwy 19combined.

*biased 540 comment inserted--->might as well get the 540. fuel not a huge difference compared to the 540,16 city, 22hwy, 18combined. but huge bhp difference 190vs 282. so 540 FTMW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, thanks for the comment! Well yeah i have been trying and trying to find one around here for a good price like that, but most of them i see are around 6 grand... I have been searching for about a year now, and this one caught my eye. The car is almost perfect except for the back end. I will get some pictures of the car when i go test drive it in a few days. The guy is very realiable and he put a engine in my 740il for a really good price, did a great job. The trunk on the passengers side is pretty smashed up, but he said he wouldnt do me wrong and he would fix all the damaged parts on the car. Just charge me the $1500 labor (the $3000 for the car includes the parts). Oh yeah, i'll post a video up on youtube and link you to. Thanks everyone, im getting a great vibe about owning a 528i! Keep on posting

Hey, thanks for the comment. Well I was going to get a manual 540i sport, but it was $7,000 and the check engine, coolant message were coming up. I loved driving it though. Plus, 5 people i have talked to about the car said they get 29 mpg on trips, and I take a lot of trips. Which is a lot better then the 17 mpg i get on my 750. I just cant pass up this deal D:.

I have a '99 528i except it's silver. Before when looking at cars, I was leaning towards a 3 series... but nah. I had to please my father. He thought the 3 series was too feminine for him..

Although the 3 series "flew" down the street more quickly, I love my 528i to death. It handles like a magic carpet. I never had a car that loved hugging sharp corners so much. I got it at 69K and I have it up to about 73K now. I put new spark plugs in, a new air filter, changed the brakes that are silky smooth now, and replaced some pulleys. The car drives like an absolute dream. I'd recommend a 528i to you from my positive and pleasurable experience!

Now with an '06 525XI that just got introduced into my family... that's a different story...

I bet you can't wait! You'll be very pleased.
I have never driven a 7 series before, but I have heard they drive and handle very nicely.

e39 is pretty high maintenance too, not as high as e32 750iL or e38 740iL but still..
I just had all cooling system and belts replaced last week, all 4 wheel bearings couple weeks before that. Today I start the car and something is whining under the hood and the whine increases with rpms. at first I thought that maybe my mechanic installed an s/c for me but than I remembered that it's an old high mileage BMW and my mechanic, while a good guy, is not kind enough to spend $4-5K on goodies for my car.
Great car and high ownership cost. BMW e39.

Oh yeah, i understand that it will be high maintenance, since ive had the two 7 series >.>. But like ive said with those, its worth it because these cars payback with the fun you get from them the next time you drive them. I absolutely love these things. Thanks

528's are awesome. Love mine. However, I bought mine with 154,666 miles on it for $2,000 with a bit of overheating (20 miles, due to air in system - repaired by bleeding) and a small (7 inches long, 3 inches high) dent on the passenger side. I understand mines is a '97, but I'm pretty sure you can get him to drop the prince to maybe $2300 or $2500 since it was involved in a crash. Offer him that amount cash and see what he says...

Maintenance will be something that comes with every car - you just have to stay on top of it. As soon as you buy it, focus on the mechanical - make sure the head gaskets aren't failing, that the electrical is good and replace your spark plugs (hell, go for it and do a full tune up). An oil change should be in order too - don't forget about that.

Like a poster above said - 528's love corners. It's a VERY nimble car for its size and just loves to hug the road. This car is like no other car I've driven before - it just feels like its glued to the road...amazing.

I would search for one that has no damage (if possible).
If you want facelift, you could get a 530 for a bit more $$$, but you would gain some Hp too. Decent performance and decent gas consumption too. The ones built after 09/2002 can accept factory Aux input if you want to go that route. Any other stereo improvement is more $$$.

I'll ask him if he can come down anymore. But he has race BMW's and such so i will make sure and ask him to do a complete check on the engine and everything before he lets me drive it out of his garage. I looked on the inside, everything looks pretty good. I cant wait to get some pictures and show everyone.
