My dad said that he went out to try and move my car last week and he put the key in and it locked up. He described it as when his jeep's wheel locks and you need to shake the wheel to turn the key. This intermittent problem might be a symptom. I would also love a DIY if this is the case.

I know there was a transistor in the key of my A6...if there's one in the BMW key it might be phasing out if the battery in the key is dying? Just a guess tho.

I'm not saying that the ring antenna is the culprit...but here some info about it...and where it's located in the steering column. The ring antenna is #7 in the diagram. BTW...if it is a 2000 5 series...its a 528i...in order to be a 525i..it would need to be an 01...but either way...they both use the same ring antenna.

And if your e39 was built AFTER 3/97...it does NOT have a transmitter receiver...that component was eliminated and its function was incorporated into the EWS Control Module:

Re-read my previous post...that's not what I wrote. Plus I added another image to help distinguish all the players (components) of EWS system.

The transmitter receiver and the ring antenna are TWO separate and different components. The transmitter receiver was phased out after 3/97 and its function incorporated into the EWS control module. THE RING ANTENNA IS STILL THERE AND CONTINUES TO PERFORM THE SAME OPERATION....except after 3/97 the ring antenna plugs directly into the EWS control module.

I've never had to replace one (or even read of anyone replacing one)...but I have worked on the other side of the steering column replacing an ignition switch.

If replacing the ring antenna is anything like the ignition switch (#2 in the diagram)...it's a cakewalk. It just involved removing the screws on top and below the column to remove the "clamshell" around the column...which then exposes everything.

hey I got an idea, Lets try the other key to make sure you dont have a key problem. I have never replace a bad ring antenna. I have replaced them due to customer not knowing what they are doing and break the wires.

I would say you have a bad ign switch b4 a ring antenna.
