Noob's Budget SM/DSP Build, Day one. "Pigpen"

This is the beginning of my AutoX Street Modified Build.

I've officially christened the car "PigPen"

Why? Because there are so many very thourough, well done projects in here, and this certainly isn't going to be one of them.

For the DIY on a half-donkey-ed build with many cut corners, Read on. If you want to run it down, go ahead, I'm as thick skinned as hard headed. This ain't gonna be Pretty.

    Starting with a 94 E36, 325is, w/sunroof, (well, not anymore)

Current mods (keep finding new stuff, decent deal for $2,800)

M50tu single vanos (215,000 miles, and purrs. BMW makes an unbelievable engine)
    M3 cams
    Lightened Flywheel
Turner Motorsports Chip for the above mods
    M3 front brake calipers
drilled front rotors - need replacing
    Active Autowerkes Catback exhaust
    Beyern Wheels
    Sunroof Delete

Projects up first (next few weeks)

Sparco Sprint 5 driver seat. $320
    Odyssey battery - $120
    Rotors - Probably stock - $100
    Baseline Dyno w/wideband - $100
Move 235/45/17 Kumho XS from the WRX to the bimmer, only 25ish runs and 5000 miles on those.
    Fan Delete

Before the start of next season:

    1. Sparco Sprint 5/R100 Driver/passenger seats.
    2. Odyssey Racing battery -$140
    3. carbon fiber sunroof filler (using the original panel for now - 13 lbs.) - $250New
    4. Full Bushing/arms replacement under-car $500
    5. 3.23 LSD (Sitting in the garage awaiting install) - $500
    6. Camber plates front - $350 ( Ground Control ? Vorshlag ? they're local so probably try to get whatever I can from them.)
    8. Camber arms rear - $250
    9. fitting 255-275/40-35/17-18's on some lightweight wheels (Dforce LTW5's + R-comps - used A6's or V710's = $1200(may pass on this, the Bayerns will probably be fine for a while)
    10. 5spd tranny. 2nd-1st synchro is shot. - found a 120k 5sp for $200.

    Carbon fiber bonnet -$500
    Carbon fiber trunk - $300

Somewhere around $5k. Ouch. ohh well, that's about what I spent on my first season of RC car racing. People don't look at you like you're quite so crazy if it's for a 1:1 car.

    Long Range Projects :

S52 Swap. Hopefully not until end of 2010 season.

    Weight savings list (done):

    37lbs - Sunroof
20lbs - Rear lower part of seat, bolsters.
    36lbs - 15" spare
    9lbs - Trunklid Toolset&carpet, floormats.
8lbs - OEM Amp and Rear speakers.
31lbs - Rear fold down seat backs
    16lbs - radio,Front Speakers(replaced with gauges though), Fogs

    182lbs so far

    Weight savings list (to do):

    63lbs - Front Power seats x 2 (120lbs total) for 1 x R100 (32lbs) 1 x Sprint v (25lbs)
    35.5lbs - OEM Battery(50lbs) for Odyssey racing battery (14.5lbs)
    -------
98.5lbs soon. If you interpolate the B.S. about the curb weight, hopefully it will be in the 2900's after these mods. I've read that with sunroof, it weighs in around 3100lbs. Manual says 2866.

    45lbs - CF hood/Trunk
    ? - CF/composite manual Mirrors
32lbs - lightweight wheels (weight reduction probably nixed due to heavier, wider tires)
    10lbs - Fogs
    ? - Fan/Fan Clutch
? - AC... NO Wayyy, this is Texas ! Definately the last to go if ever.
    ---------
    Another 100lbs or so.

to run SM, your gonna wanna run 285 A6's. SM took a good hit in the '10 PAX so its even harder to be competitve with a DD/auto-x car. DSP would be a better way to go, put the stock cams and brakes on and your good to go.

    Saw the PAX, .877, ouch.

I'm not going to worry about being competitive for at least another season.

I'm sure Ill get to 285's eventually. Hopefully the whole list will be complete by nationals next year, so I can be fully owned. It'll be a fun year regardless.

going to use this as the holder for the Sunroof Delete Pics. They should be up tomorrow.

Ran in SM for the first time yesterday.

Actually I think I'm pleased. I was last, but only 2-3 seconds (on a 50 second course) off prepped Sti's on R-comps. I improved almost a second per run, and all my fastest splits were on my last run. That's how it's supposed to work

I was also .2 ahead of an M3 with an LS1 in it, so maybe "size doesn't matter" No Extenze sponsorship for me...

There is virtually no SM prep to this car, other than the M3 cams, and lightened Flywheel, and maybe 50lbs of weight reduction(sunroof, some interior). I was running on 225/45/17 Kumho ecsta ASX all seasons on the front, and same size Yoko S-drives on the rear.

Moving to the 235/45/17 Kumho XS'es from all seasons on my WRX yielded about 1.5-2 seconds, mixed with, I'm sure, some improvement as a driver.

I'll run the XS'es at the last race of the year, which is on a road course.

By next race in early Dec. I'll hopefully have the car on better rate springs, lowered, Fan Delete done, and possibly even on new Bilsteins.

After some apprehension, I'm stoked, that I could possibly be running competitively locally with even a mild prep.

Get rid of the Beyern wheels they are heavy as hell. Ask me how i know. Get some light wheels, you will feel the difference for sure.

Some D-Force LTW5's and R-comps are on the to-do list, hopefully before the start of next season.

Think the Bayerns actually weigh less than the stocker WRX rims though. (24lbs, amazing for a 17x7 rim, what a rock)

    Rethinking the SM.

looking at some stock cams. Looks like I can retain the lightened flywheel for DSP.

I was also liking the number of entrants in DSP at nationals over the SM class. I'll probably be a little less embarrassingly slow in comparison to the DSP field.

That looks like it's going to be a great AutoX car. You should take it to Driveway Austin to stretch her legs every once in a while. I'm not really familiar with that model. Can you get shorter/would you want shorter gears than 3.15 since you don't need the top end for autox, or would the extra shifting take away from your torque advantage?

    Good luck!

so far I really haven't had to shift in the two races I've had it in. With the current gearing, I'm hitting about 65 at the limiter in 2nd. It seems to be a good compromise for a daily driver.

I'm not sure I'll change it. The LSD's in 3.15 are pretty reasonably priced too.

We are having our last Auto-x of the year at a road course, called Harris Hill road, Just south of Austin, in San Marcos. We used to race at the Driveway, but they added concrete barriers, I guess, making it a bit dangerous for Auto-X. I wasn't racing when they were going out there.

had the Harris Hill Road Auto-x in 40degree weather and drizzle for the morning runs.

It was hilarious. S-2000 after S-2000 going off course, and several other makes as well.

we ended up only getting 2 runs in each set of heats due to so many offs. (including taking out finish line timing twice)

The car is performing well, but I was a wuss, starting out in the wet with a 117 sec run 1st run, then a 113, then a 108 the 3rd. I let it get out of hand the fourth run(and the dryest ) and DNF'ed. It's too bad as I was really letting it go, and had dropped a second off my best 1st sector time.

Unfortunately, I have something grinding coming from the rear. Not sure yet if it's the diff or the Wheel bearings. Not concerned about the Diff, as I was planning to replace it before the first race of next year with a LSD. Bearings don't cost much, so that's also no big deal. What I can't tell is if it's bad or just so-so, since I've removed all the sound proofing. I'm sure I'm hearing a lot more noise than I normally would.

I was ahead of a few SSM Vette's so for what is essentially a disheveled Stock 325is with M3 cams, weight reduction, and exceptionally crappy tires, I can't wait to see what it's going to be like with 255 or 265 tires, and suspension other than the who knows how old bilstein TC's.

The Grey 09 WRX in the background is now sporting the SPT exhaust off my nearly identical 08' Grey WRX. So now I have my first hobby fund transfer $$$ that I can spend on the 325. Can't decide between the LSD or going for the suspension.

new-to-me limited Slip diff on the way.

came off a 57,000 mile M3, so hopefully it will be in good shape.

Unfortunately, I go in for shoulder surgery tomorrow, and won't be able to install it for a few weeks.

Well the surgery didn't go great, so I won't be driving anything until mid -feb.

I will still be going to the NT at mineral wells whether I'm running the 325 or the WRX.

rotator cuff was torn, didn't show up on the MRI.

Fixed now, but in a sling for 6-8 weeks.

Been needing this surg. for 2 years, so nice to finally get it done. when I went in for it the first time, they found I had a blown disc in my neck, so they fixed that instead. I've just been putting up with the shoulder since then. I have a kind of warped sense of pain, so I tend to just let things go.

    Still don't have any seats.

I have my stockers for sale in the texas thread, but didn't get them out before the surgery, and am not sure I'll be able to with one arm. I started to look at some DIY's today.

    Started some cosmetic work today:

    1. Changing the Beyern Meshes from silver w/polished lip, to Gloss Black with Polished lip.

    2. Repainting the sideskirts and Rear bumper cover, it's starting to look pretty obvious that they came from a Dakar M3.

Sanding the Wheels with only one working arm sucks.

    Ready for Clearcoat

    THE HORROR !!!

I applied the clearcoat (Rustoleum) and it lifted the gloss black and made it look like truck bedliner. There goes 4-5 hours of work over three days.

This is my inspiration, apologies to the guy I'm copying.

Done with most of the cosmetic stuff.

Two weeks until the Rotator cuff sling comes off and I'll hopefully be able to do some heavier work, like the LSD.

Suspension should be here next week (Bilstein sports w/ eibach pro kit springs, thanks TBoneM3 for the great deal!), so it should be a bit lower soon too. Be transferring the used 235/45/17 Kumho XS'es to it as well. All thats left is installation of the suspension and limited slip, a new battery (miata), front rotors, camber plates, and adjustable rear control arms.

First race of the season is Feb. 7th.

Bumper and skirts came out decent, considering a gimp did it with rattle cans. Its a nice 20 footer now.

    what it looks like now:

Picked up two more classes for a total of 18hours this semester so that I can graduate at the end of the summer. I'm doing this at least in part so that school won't interfere with Nationals in Sept.

I think I'll be adding the Turner underdrive pulley kit to the build at the same time I do the fan delete.

I need to figure out how to secure the radiator better, it has a Griffen racing radiator, but it's not secured very well.

    Is Evo Advantage still $65?

I'm only somewhat back in the saddle. I'm getting prices on installing the suspension and LSD, as I don't think I'm up for that yet. I'm working on typing with two hands now, and hope that shifting will be doable by the first Spokes Auto-x in early feb.

I was coming up with all kinds of ways to put wheels back on, paint, sand.

I put wheels on my creeper, then lowered the car with the stock jack with my left hand until it was low enough to just push the creeper/wheel on the hub.

The gimp will find a way !

    Pulling the excess radio stuff:

Going to make a custom carbon fiber gauge faceplate for the top slot for these silver rimmed autometer gauges (not the air/fuel, going to add water temp and oil temp or voltage) from sandwich carbonfiber from sierra composites.

    Got a bunch done.

suspension in. Wasn't much fun with the shoulder in the shape it's still in. I find though, after every day I stress it some, I make big improvements in range of motion and pain lessening.

Also Pulled the Throttle body(had to because of the shoulder) and cleaned the Idle Control Valve as I was getting some bouncing idle problems. It appears to have eliminated the problem.

The jack on the breaker bar is how a gimp frees up a hard bolt.

    The Finished product.

Tires are tucked in nicely, and it looks much less like a 4x4.

next, the LSD, and the Fan Delete.

Don't think I'm going to get those done before the first race of the season next Sunday, 2/07/10
