Question Speedo doesn't like to wake up in the morning

My '90 535ia's speedo will sometimes not respond to speed. Only in the morning it seems. I've replaced diff speed sender which was an earlier issue. So, the econo gauge works and the odometer works but even after warm up, the speedo may take 1-2 miles to jump in to service.

I appreciate your insights.

rare on bmw but it is the servomotor in hte cluster.

easier to simply replace the cluster with another. (make sure it matches back plastic color etc)

Mine does the same thing sometimes. I just slap the dash to the right side of the cluster, and it pops back to life.

More character points .

Ditto. Happens occasionally to me. Dash slap fix works so far.

Actually I've had some weirdness in the capacitors do this.

Mine wasn't "not moving" mine would not move for like 2 miles of driving in the cold, and then it'd shoot up to about 80 mph regardless of my road speed. It'd settle out. Hasn't done it in a few years though.

Thanks for your responses. Is there any way to change out the capasitors or is it better to replace the cluster?

Clusters can be cheap too though.. depending on your level of DIYitness.

Mine is really bad at this. Slapping the dash does not work any more. I did find, however, that a good hard stop brought it back. I am thinking it is an electrical connection issue inside, the metal prongs ( for lack of a better word ) that connect the speedometer on the front part to the electronics in the back.

When my speedo falls asleep in the morning it usually wakes up after I floor the accelerator. I always thought it was a dirty speed sensor.

When my cluster conks out instead of replacing the cluster or capacitors I disconnect the negative cable from the battery for a short time. That seems to fix it every time and it's good for another 6 months.
