1991 - 1999 (E36) (1991 - 1999) The first modern 3 Series, the E36, was the model that paved the way for the 3 Series to be named "Car of the Year" every year since the model was driving off showroom floors. Radically redesigned in 1992, the E36 was not the same 3 Series as the E21 and E30. Larger, less boxy in design, and equipped with a dual overhead cam engine, multilink rear suspension, and a more finished interior, the E36 balances sport with luxury.

Sorry, still a n00b to the e36. What's the difference in the gery hard cut key, black key or plastic ones? I only have one set and would like to get a spare, just in case.

Thanks!

First of all you need to post the YEAR of your car because we are not mind readers and it does matter.
An EWSI or EWSII key is 70 bucks including the lighting feature which is considered the main key. This was with my 10% BMWCCA discount. I just got a new one so I know for fact this is the price.

Also I got it in 2 days.

You need to bring your registration and driver's license to get them to do this for you.

It doesn't matter if it is the main key with the BMW Roundel or a grey key called a grey key because it is just grey in color for $5 less, same function.

Also there is a wallet key that looks like a credit card but it doesn't work with the EWS cars.

That's the hardest part is to find a place that will but laser cut keys. Open the phone book and start calling each one and ask that's my suggestion.

How does this work when the original engine has been swapped? I need a new key but my engine is not original. Would the key be ordered under the VIN of the chassis or the VIN of the engine block? I believe the ignition is still original to the 92 325, so my assumption is I goto BMW with that information. If anybody finds somebody to laser cut BMW keys in the tri-state area, let me know!

As long as the ignition system is still factory it will be under the vin code of the body (the windshield) Also the 92-94 cars do not have computer chips in them so there is not computer coding needed.

Check your local ACE Hardware store. Some of them have the advanced key service center and can make copies of BMW keys, including chip keys. They charge about $20 for a straight copy of a non-chip key and chip keys are about $45 depending on year/model.
The remote lock system I installed came with the key fobs with the flip out key and I had them cut to match my BMW key at ACE, then I transferred the security chip myself.

I have a 1994 325is, im guessing that is EWSI right?

So tomorrow i should just run down there with the registration and my license, some money and then they order it and have it sent to my house?

Look online, or in the phone book for a Locksmith, preferably one who is a member of The Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA). Call them and ask if they cut these keys, and if not, ask for a referral to one who does. They should save you a lot of money over the dealer.

I ordered two new keys yesterday through an independent BMW service center, $80 for two, not too bad, My e36 is Pre EWS so I dont have the transponder key which cost way more. I just got lucky with my car on this subject.

I just had one made this summer for $65+tax. Had to go to the dealer with registration and drivers license and had to pick it up in person, they won't ship keys anymore. That was for a chipped master key.

I have an 04/1995 model, what "type" of key would it have? The original key has a yellow LED in it, but I have no idea if it's got a chip in it (or if it's EWS1, 2, whatever.) Who would like to educate me? (Please!)
