335i with all-season tire, good or bad?

I am thinking of putting ultra high performance all season on my E90 335i lately. I am looking at Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus and Yokohama ADVAN S4. Since I compare the rating on tirerack, All season's treadwear and comfort rate is way better than summer's. And since I dont reli go track or drive to the limit of the vechile, I think all-season is a good fit for me?
Compare these top ranking UHP all season tires with summer tires, the difference on dry traction does not seem really huge. I am just making this assumption according to the rates. So I wonder if there's anything I am missing????

and tire sizes are 225/40/18F and 255/35/18R
I'm using the OE sport package wheels.

Exclamation

I have used Ultra High Performance All Season tires on several different sport sedans and, in my area, they are a good choice. Two others to look at are the Pirelli P Zero Nero (one of my favorites) and the Kumho ASX. Both do very well in the dry (very well means they hang on a long time and they break away in a predictable and controllable way), are very good in the wet and are sufficient in light snow. (These tires require careful driving in the snow to be effective, but we don't get a lot of actual snow in my area).

You are also right that if you aren't going onto the track, you really don't need ultra high performance summer tires. The difference in adhesion, while significant on the track, shouldn't be relevant on the road. (Frankly, if you want more performance on the road than is available in a good UHP All Season, I don't want to be on the same road with you.) Depending on the amount of snow you actually get, the UHP All Season may be your best choice. (BTW, I am in Delaware which is Mid-Atlantic.)

Regards,

A mere 12 hours ago I had new Michelins A/S+ put on my car. I can't report on them yet, but a friend of mine rec'd them which pushed me to them over the Yoko. He reports that they do very well in snow. Depending on how much snow you get, I'd consider another set of wheels with dedicated snow tires, but if it's just occasional, then these should do fine.

And yes, you should go to the track. It's the most fun you can have out of bed.

All-season = no-season

Seriously - in Canada why not do performance winter tires and something like a max performance summer tire? Remember the Tire-Rack reviews are customer based, people who swear by AS tires, don't generally explore the limits of their cars so their perception of grip is probably off. Just my $.02.

I had Kumho ASX's on my RX8 that I just traded in for this 335i. I didn't have any problem with them, and will probably buy them again once these OEM run flats go.

How are the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 , it came on with the car and was wondering hows the treadlife of these tires as there are ultrahigh performance tires

How many miles do they generally last with normal driving, not track

15-20k on my E46 M3...great street tires that have no business on the track or autox. Super rain grip, super pricey. They have pretty weak shoulders which help with comfort and rain grip but fail at being pushed had in the dry.

You live in Canada, I'd say get dedicated snows. I've used the Michellin A/S on my e36 for 5+ years, but they come off at the first snow fall because although they are slightly adequate for light snow, they fail in anything deeper than a couple of centimeters and are practically useless in the deep negative temperatures. They are a great tire if you want to play chicken with bad weather and work very well in the summer. Don't count on them in the Canadian winter though and they do not last that long, the center tread (which is the all season compound) wears pretty quickly.

...also, your insurance company may not cover you if you have an accident in snow/ice conditions and you didn't have M+S or better (mountain/snowflake symbol) tires. Well worth the money.

Good point about insurance, and in fact, many municipalities won't let you on the main roads without the M & S designation. The thing is though, DnA, all-season tires carry that designation, so they're legal, and probably will meet insurance companies' standards. (Admittedly, I have no idea what rules/standards may apply in Canada.)

Well I think they will cover you unless you have the added snow tire discount like what I have with my insurance. I get a 5% discount, but if I don't have my snow tires on in the winter, then they can deny my claims or maybe raise my insurance considerably. It is kind of an incentive way of approaching it. Mind you in Quebec, snow tires are mandated by law and Ontario is considering a similar law which I think would be a great thing.

Why all seasons? You will not make it through winter in your 335 on A/S tires. Keep your oe tires and get some winters...

GunnerNell, you are correct that M+S technically just means an all-season. If the tire also has the "mountain/snowflake" symbol (Transport Canada reference to snow tires) then it is considered a snow tire. The additional clarification is made regarding high-performance tires in snow conditions: "Wide, high performance tires, other than those that are specifically designed as snow tires, are not suitable for use on snow covered roads."

My insurance company specifically noted to me when I got my policy that they "expected" the car to have snow tires during the winter season, and that without them, there might be a question as to coverage if I was in an accident...in Canada the tires would require the mountain/snowflake symbol for me to comply. The thousand or so I spent for a full set of winter tires and rims is well worth the money and peace of mind, let alone the far better control you get during winter conditions with winter tires.

Cheers
Duey

Are there any things I need to look for if I buy snow wheels/tires? More specifically, should I have any worries with the TPMS or any other features on my space machine?

You should have no problem at all with the TPMS -- as long as you have TPMS sensors installed in the tires/wheels.

OK cool... on that note does anyone have any snow tire suggestions for a 335? I would be buying a complete set of wheels and tires, trying not to spend too much though.

Check out tirerack.com, they'll recommend something. Stick with 17" I say.
