new SAE towing standard J2807

While looking around at trucks , I found out there is a new voluntary towing standard that will make tow capacity ratings a little bit more realistic and comparable between manufacturers.

I knew tow ratings were determined by the manufacturer but I didn't realize just how arbitrary it has been up to this point (they can make up whatever number they want). It would explain how an F150 is rated to pull over 11000 pounds, or a Ridgeline 5000.

Anyway, two articles:

Its about time.

Now wouldn't it be nice if tire tread-wear ratings were standardized, too?

This is a very good thing and they've selected some monster grades to test on.

I've towed up and over the grade heading east out of Davis Dam on the way to races at Phoenix. It's a beast since you ahve to start from a dead stop at the bottom so you can't get a run at it.

The Baker grade is no picnic either as it is hot, hot, hot; even during a summer evening. Add the crazy traffic on the 15 between LA and Vegas and it becomes even more fun.
