1991 - 1999 (E36) (1991 - 1999) The first modern 3 Series, the E36, was the model that paved the way for the 3 Series to be named "Car of the Year" every year since the model was driving off showroom floors. Radically redesigned in 1992, the E36 was not the same 3 Series as the E21 and E30. Larger, less boxy in design, and equipped with a dual overhead cam engine, multilink rear suspension, and a more finished interior, the E36 balances sport with luxury.

Thumbs up New 325i, few questions/problems...

Hey everyone, I searched for some of this stuff but didn't have much luck, so any advice is helpful.

- Sunroof doesn't work, no sound or anything when I press the switch, but the fuse is fine so I'm not sure where else to look.

- CEL with o2 sensor code, I plan on replacing it this weekend, but I read that this code can also be triggered by a vacuum leak, any common failure places I should check for vacuum leaks?

- Tail light failure on OBC, which isn't actually true, PO messed with pretty much every wire in the car, so I had to put some stuff back together, but now all the lights on both tails work, so how can i clear this?

- Possible rear shock mount failure on passenger side, there was no carpet covering that side, and it looks like the rubber top should be about 1/2" lower to sit flush/look right. I haven't checked what the driver's side looks like, haven't had much time to check it out, but my question is, is this a hard fix? I have basic tools, but I don't know if I could handle having to take the whole rear suspension apart.

- Heat and A/C don't work. Air blows through really strong, but it's just the temp of the outside air, and actually, air comes through pretty strong even when the heat/ac is off and I have the vents spun to closed.

- Pretty much every reading the OBC gives me is wrong, it always says it's negative 35 degrees F, with the F blinking, and always says I'm going 35.1-35.3 MPH. I'm not sure how often the MPG is supposed to change, but it always says ~21, even after I've been on the freeway for 30+ minutes with the in-dash MPG gauge at 28+.

- The brake pad sensor light is on, I haven't gotten a chance to take off the wheels and check the pads, but I read that you have to replace the sensors to get rid of the light, and I was unable to find them online. How much do they run and where should I buy them from?

- Possibly related to the brake pad sensor light, the steering wheel shakes, sometimes pretty bad, when I'm slowing down. It kind of feels like warped rotor(s), but it seems like the shaking would be faster if that was the problem, so I'm not sure. It's also more severe at seemingly random times than at others, so I don't know what that could mean.

Please post if you have insight into any of these little problems, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

I think there was one more problem I was thinking of posting, but now I can't remember it...so there might be more to come

it could be seized, or the switch is bad. do your windows work? if not, this could be related to the "comfort relay" (search if you don't know what i mean)

you can check the valve cover gasket, those tend to have some leaks

it's not really possible to clear it, have you checked the trunk harness that runs along the driverside rear into the trunk panel? there may be some frayed wires in there, or it's a tail light module that needs replacement. i believe there is a way to disable it, but you have to search, i can't recall how

the rear shocks and rear shock mounts are fairly easy to fix, can be done with wrench/allen wrench/jackstands, etc.

- Heat and A/C don't work. Air blows through really strong, but it's just the temp of the outside air, and actually, air comes through pretty strong even when the heat/ac is off and I have the vents spun to closed.

the -35F reading means that the ambient temperature sensor is missing or hanging by a wire literally. you'll need a new one or have to repair the current one you have. the speed reading is not your speedometer, it is more of an average speed reading, you can reset it for any trip. the MPG reading is an average over a large distance, you can reset it while you're coasting and it'll read 99MPG, but not for long.

i have a set if you need, i'll sell them for 60% of what retail is +$5 for shipping. yup, you have to replace them to get rid of the light. you can try pelicanparts or autohausaz for parts.

this could mean a lot of things, possibly bad bushings, or overly worn suspension components like control arm ball joints/tie-rods/and more.

I think there was one more problem I was thinking of posting, but now I can't remember it...so there might be more to come
