1991 - 1999 (E36) (1991 - 1999) The first modern 3 Series, the E36, was the model that paved the way for the 3 Series to be named "Car of the Year" every year since the model was driving off showroom floors. Radically redesigned in 1992, the E36 was not the same 3 Series as the E21 and E30. Larger, less boxy in design, and equipped with a dual overhead cam engine, multilink rear suspension, and a more finished interior, the E36 balances sport with luxury.

You pulled out the oil pump?

There is a nut on the front of it that holds the sprocket on. This has been known to come loose in some cases and cause failure. Did you check that?

Have you ever pulled it apart before or something happened to it to give it a reason to mess up?

+1 you will want to thread lock it, make sure there is no oil on the threads or nut.

Exclamation

There's oil all over the filter and down in the middle of the pump, where the long-ass bolt enters down into and screws. Is this bad? There's also no washer on the bolt and i checked all threw out the pump and the washer is no where to be found?

That's not your oil pump man. Your oil pump is on the bottom of the engine hidden by the oil pan.

That is your oil filter housing. Did you do your last oil change on your own? Did the new oil filter (you did put a new filter in right?) come with a few different sized washers and o-rings?

Are you sure the noise is coming from the oil filter housing? I don't believe there are any moving parts in there. I think you might be hearing vanos noise or lifter tick.

I wouldn't go hog wild with any locktite on the oil filter housing either. Just wanted to throw that out there.

Here is a pic of the oil filter housing showing what parts should be there...

and here is a pic of the oil pump. The nut I was talking about earlier is number 18.

I was gonna say how did you know it was the oil pump, its sorta in the middle of the motor and would be hard to pinpoint that. Its also probably not the filter like ^^ said. Its probably a vanos problem or could honestly even be a water pump issue, allot of times it will even make noise up to that area.
