New toy. E34 540i

Hey all!

New here and thought i should say hi.

Just picked up my new toy. E34 540

I litteraly mean picked up on the back of a car trailer. It wont start at the moment which is why i got it for the huge price of zero dollars from a family friend who needed the space in their garage. Will have to see if its worth getting on the road.

If it cant be made to go again then i will be looking at my options.

I really think this is the best shape BMW ever came out with, really hope it has nothing termianly wrong with it. Time will tell as it will be dropped off at my mechanic tomorow.

That is a beautiful car. Even if you can't make it run you made out like a bandit.

Short of an under the dash fire, what could possibly be so wrong that the car can't be put back on the road? That is a great looking car and at first glance well worth the trouble to get it back up to speed.

Free 540i? Man, I thought the 71 Beetle with no engine I seen for $300 was a good deal.

These guys are right. Anything short of an electrical fire or collapsed roof (which this car obviously does not have) she is worth savng.

Start with the basics and give us plenty of updates.

Well it booked in with the mechanic early next week so fingers crossed.

I am not sure what options it has but it look to be fairly well opointed.

It is a bit rough around the edges but it should present fairly well with a bit of tlc.

As this is my first BMW (except for a brief encounter with an early eighties 318i coupe, about 10 years ago, that didnt want to play nice) i am still learning about the model. All i know at the moment is that the seats are comfy.

Will keep you updated.

Some interior pics....

Hey mate

yeah it dose appear to have a few mods.

Cant wait to hear the sound of that exhaust.

Not so sure about the instrument cluster, might change that back to stock.

Will have to wait and see what the mech says about anything else it has had done to it.

The price was excellent but thats why i am not going to get my hopes up about getting it going. It might be to good to be true.

Cars i have had lately.... ford terriory (wifes car), jeep cherokee (destroyed by the wife and replaced with the territory) and a ford fairmont hack complete with dents, scrapes, scratches, rattles, sqeaks, leaks and a really funky smell that i cant seem to get rid of. Lovely car but will be replaced by the e34, fingers crossed.

Are you serious? Man, a 540i is an awesome upgrade from these sausages.

You should be driving a turbo'd Holden V8 or something hot in down under. In the US Faiemounts died is the early 80's I think. I seen one in the junk yard with a stick and I could not stop laughing.

Yes the 540 is a major upgrade from the fairmont.
Over here they still make the fairmont but i am guessing that its a completely different car to a US version.

As for driving a tubo'd holden V8.... well I am probably under the thumb whe it comes to cars. My wife dos'nt actually know the 540 is a V8 and i plan on keeping that way.

(some of my pre-wife cars include 71 ford escort with sierra cosworth engine, 61 dodge phoenix with a 383ci engine and a turbo skyline)

She's alive!

Just got word from the mechanic that it started and running well. All it needed was a fresh battery, some spark plugs and some freah fuel.

Should be registered and road worthy by the end of the week.

Woo hoo ! happy days!
