Ellipsoid vs Hella replacement lamps

I could be wrong but I read somewhere that the ellipsoids are not cut right for HID's. I could be very wrong.

What are better for HID's:

Ellipsoid's or Hella quarts replacements?

Thanks,
Matt

Neither is "cut right" for HID.

Only true HID projectors retrofitted into e30 ellipsoid housings will be "right"

That said.. for gods sake please don't use Hella H1/H4 housings.

Use US Ellipsoids, found on 88-89 US e30's. (Hella made) with a 9006 HID kit.

US cars had them in '88 and '89, using 9005/9006 bulbs. Euro's had H1 bulbs. Similar look, but different bulbs (and cut-offs).

I'm in the middle of reassembling a set of Hella smoked smileys with powdercoated super durable satin black trim rings and DDM thin 5000k HID kit. If you're interested let me know but be advised I'll probably be asking $350 or so complete when all is said and done, totally refurbed to like new.

Both are ellipsoid types. The difference is in the beam pattern produced and the bulbs used in each. Having had both on my car I think that the smilies are superior for halogen bulbs. I'm sure Stuck has reasons for recommending the US version for HIDs. I'd be curious to know what those are.
