1991 - 1999 (E36) (1991 - 1999) The first modern 3 Series, the E36, was the model that paved the way for the 3 Series to be named "Car of the Year" every year since the model was driving off showroom floors. Radically redesigned in 1992, the E36 was not the same 3 Series as the E21 and E30. Larger, less boxy in design, and equipped with a dual overhead cam engine, multilink rear suspension, and a more finished interior, the E36 balances sport with luxury.

CEL light on and can not remove

had cel come on. I read it with a scanner which said spark plug misfire...I replaced plugs and then REMOVED CODES....but can not remove CEL light from dash with my scanner...I took it to shop who now says they tried 4 different scanners underneath dash and on engine outlet and says they can not remove....what now?

I've studied the schematics in the Bentley Manual for my E36, but my Manual ends with 1998 models. You should check Bentley for your vehicle.

The CEL is driven directly from the engine computer (DME). If the light is on and you think it shouldn't, then the fault is with the DME; or maybe the wire between DME and lamp has a hard short to ground keeping it always lit. There could also be a short within the Instrument Cluster, but I think that is the least likely cause. Good luck
