Renault to exit F1 as well??!?!?!?!

Holy crap I hope it's just a bunch of tabloid-esque rumors!

http://planetf1.com/story/0,18954,3213_5675081,00.html

Just hours after Toyota announced their withdrawal from Formula One, questions were raised by Renault's future in the sport.

The French carmaker held a board meeting in Paris in Wednesday afternoon to debate whether or not they will join the likes of Honda, BMW and Toyota in leaving the sport.

Interim team bosses Bob Bell and Jean-Francois Caubet were both present, however, according to the BBC they were just there to listen and were not permitted to participate in the discussion.

Renault, who won the 2005 and 2006 Championships with Fernando Alonso, recently came under scrutiny for the team's involvement in the Singapore 2008 race-fixing scandal.

Handed a two-year suspended ban by the FIA, Renault vowed to continue in Formula One. However, their participation is in now in doubt.

No word has yet been leaked on the outcome of the meeting although the Daily Mail is reporting that their exit from F1 is imminent.

'Renault's board met in Paris to discuss whether to make their own exit, possibly not until the end of next season, although they will probably remain as engine suppliers,' claims the newspaper.

'They are expected to announce their decision by the end of the week.'

Your original post implied that Renault will race for 2010 but that 2011 and beyond was what was under discussion.

A huge scandal, poor results and a lousy economy. Red bull also crapped on their customer motors as well.

Not surprising if they bail.

I know, but a team announcong their exit sucks nonetheless. Just like Bridgestone did.

F1 has NO tire supplier lined up you know.

Michelin is not interested, Good Year and Pirelli neither.

If I'm a tire supplier, there is no way in hell I'd do F1. The rules are too constrictive and it's too expensive. The only tire manufacturers that "need" F1 are companies like Cooper or Toyo and there is no way they can afford it.

Even as an engine supplier, why would Renault hang around. The rules around engine design or exceptionally constrictive as well. I remember reading/seeing something about the engine rules specifying cylinder spacing and cylinder wall thickness. Ridiculous.

I know it sucks when these suppliers and teams leave, but it is also completely understandable and the intelligent thing for them to do.

Too constrictive? It's a spec tires series. Bridgestone was using their molds from 1997. Build one hard compound, and one softer. If it sucks for the track, oh well, it's a spec tire.

Precisely, I loved Pirelli's quote about how they are only interested in making tires that have "road going relevance" and that's why they'll continue to be WRC and GP2 suppliers!

F1's double whammy is horrendous management and and collapse of the economy. It seems like the decision is fairly easy for teams to just pull the plug, especially in the case of Renault which is effectively in shamed mode right now.

Renault have called for patience as the French manufacturer weighs up the pros and cons of following Toyota out of Formula One.

On Wednesday, Toyota announced their immediate withdrawal from Formula One, citing the "current severe economic realities" for their decision.

Hours later another team, Renault, appeared to be facing the same fate as the French carmakers held an extraordinary board meeting to discuss its future plans.

And with the recent Singapore race-fixing scandal fresh in the minds as well as the two-year suspended ban hanging over their heads, many are predicting Renault will be the next team to walk away.

However, Renault Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn has revealed that no decision was made on Wednesday, although one will be forthcoming before the year is out.

"You will have to be patient," Ghosn told Reuters.

"We will make an announcement on our participation in Formula 1 before the end of the year."

Should Renault quit Formula One, they will become the fourth major manufacturer to leave, joining Honda, BMW and Toyota.
So it seems they'll race in 2010, the rest is up in the air.

if renault's competitive next year they'll stay. you can talk "economic realities" all you want but if toyota and bmw had been consistently podiuming this year they'd still be around. also, the fia's "hey guys how about we do this now?" approach to rules making played a huge part in bringing this situation about.

If Toyota had won a championship they would have stayed, but they invested millions of dollars to have a bottom tier team. I think their choice of drivers was one contributing factor: Trulli was fast for 1 lap (qualifying) but in the race he would lose 1 second a lap to his own previous lap time. Kobayashi was able to tun in 2nd and turn amazing lap times, shame they only used him for two races...........
If you trhink about it, the only teams that left were the ones that wanted to win a championship in 3 years or less: Honda, Toyota, BMW.
and those who hate Ferrari, they stayed thru the worst seasons and never said we didn't win or accomplish our objectives, so we leave.
