X3, X5 & X6 (E53, E70, E71, E83) (2000 - current) BMW invented a new word when they introduced their SUVs to the world: Sport Activity Vehicle. Sportier and with more car like agility than the standard SUV, with all of the hauling perks for a more active lifestyle. Introduced in 1996, the X5 continues to be a hit. The younger sibling, the X3, was born in 2003.

Hard braking on the highway vehicle shaking

Owner of 2004 X5 4.4i Sport. 56K

Vehicles shakes pretty bad when I brake hard on the highway going above 60mph. If I brake hard anything less than 60mph no shaking...I don't understand what could be causing this. Is it the calipers, rotors, brakes? I had my front brakes/rotors replaced 6months ago by local monro brake shop.

When i explain the issue to same shop they said its probably the ABS kicking in and not to worry about it. I'm concerned and wondering if this is common issue with these vehicles. If anyone experienced same issue and what the results were?

Thanks for your time...

If its the ABS you will have the icon come on in the middle of the cluster stating that it is active, I would have to guess that they used cheap rotors and pads and the rotors are your problem.

Also check your tires... how old are they? They may still have tread on them but may be out of round due to age.

Warped rotors are seldom the case.... you have brake deposits left on your rotors due to improper bedding or lack of. You need to re-bed your brakes and rotors.

Have similar problem, upon inspection found that one of my boots was ripped, thus allowing dirt to get inside there. So gonna replace the boot.

Bad thrust arm bushings are a common culprit for the symptoms you describe. And if it only happens after driving for a while on the freeway, then you may have a sticking caliper that wasn't noticed during the brake job.

Out-of-round tires can cause that type of problem, but ususally it's not something that you'll notice only when braking, you'd feel it all the time. And a torn CV boot will cause a vibration on accelleration - not braking - at highway speeds, if the joint is dried out.
