North Georgia Hikers/Campers/etc - Winter Camping Sites?

As with most state or federal parks they close up around October or sometimes November.

Anyone know any sites up north that are actually open year round or atleast deeper into winter? Using google and searching it seems most are October or November at the latest.

Anyone know anything else?

What kind of camping? like, pads for the tent and whatnot, or you find the clearing in the trees camping?

I've camped on Cumberland Island in December... you might want to check with them via www.nps.gov

Dunno if you're looking for mountains or maritime/beach though.

I need to be able to drive into the site in lowered cars... Couple BMW E30 friends that we normally camp at the Dragon during the year want to come down to Georgia. So hiking in and finding a spot is what I prefer but need a 'site' and a place to park this time

Not sure how far north you are wanting to go, but I think Red Top Mtn is open 12 months of the year. Also, close enough that it could be easily scouted if you aren't familiar with the place. Check it out.

try andy's cove just north of Helen on 75 (not I-75 but the 75 that runs through downtown helen) There's parking right off the road and you can hike into trey mountain, there's some camping sites back there. Also, that would be a fun road to run in the bmw.

  • I have camped there once in a pop up camper, and once in one of their really nice 2 room cabins. Each of those time, I remember seeing several spots where folks used tents. It is an extremely popular campground, so I couldn't imagine them not being open all year round.
