e30 first impression

Hey all,

Been looking at picking up an e30 325is/x or 318is now that I'm in market for a new car and took out an 87 325i 4-door for a hour test drive around the city.

Gotta say, thorougly underwhelmed with the handling -- did not feel nimble at all, heaviest clutch I've ever driven (even more than my PoS S10 I had as a kid); car generally felt really heavy. Pulled strong though.

Car was well-cared for -- lots of receipts, shocks were new, bushings were not; original steels with cheap all-season rubber.

Would a well-setup/sorted out 325i feel a lot better than this or should I really be focusing on the Sport models?

A 22 year old car that has not had the suspension properly maintained is not going to drive very well. Did you ask the seller if he had replaced the clutch recently

Car most likely has never had the suspension bushings changed.
That and bad alignment or a bent rim can make any car steer heavy.
Heavy feeling clutch can be the clutch pedal assembly or the clutch throwout bearing.

Good to hear. I figured I was jumping the gun a bit. I'm going to check out a (supposedly) mint 88 325ix tomorrow.

Keep in mind the ix weighs 200 pounds more than a typical e30. Also the 4 wheel drive will feel different as well.

yeah, I had a top-heavy, awd boat in the form of a '90 Audi Coupe Quattro with +2 235/45/17 slabs of rubber that felt more nimble than that car I drove yesterday.
