Z4 (E85, E86) (2003 - 2008) In 2003 the Z4 replaced the Z3. Meaner, edgier, and no longer a car born of spare parts, the Z4 took to the challenge of replacing the popular Z3 seriously. The shark like design, multi link rear suspension, and improved power makes the Z4 the new roadster to beat. In 2006 a coupe design was also introduced.

does your z4 make a lot of noise on the highway?

when your driving with the top up at like 60-80 does the z4 make any noise? or is there a reasonable difference between the car and like a non convertible? im talking about like a 2004 if it helps.

There is a lot of tire noise in mine. And since the fabric top is not a sound barrier, I can hear everything that's going on outside. That's why I usually drive with the top down.

They can be pretty loud especially torward the rear window and back. I get a a little windnoise from back there. You shouldn't have any in front unless your not sealed up properly around window(I've test drove an si that had a bad window seal on the drivewrs side). I believe it's pretty quiet compared to other droptops I've had before. The happiness i have from driving it blocks out all the noise for me.

I almost exclusively drive with the top down. I have the dealership mesh wind deflector.

I can have a conversation even on the highway. Everyone that gets in the car says, "This is SO QUIET.... I mean... it is QUIET!"

If anything, I hear those runflats pummeling every cranny in the road.

Yep, quite noisy indeed! Itis certainly no Jaguar! I suspect that the majority of the noise can be attributed to the type of tyres as it seems like very loud tyre noise at highway speeds.

I'm still running the original Bridgestone Potenza Runflats on mine, which I believe are an inherently noisy tyre. When these are due for replacemet I'll probabl give a set on non-runflat Yokahoma S-Drives a go, which I believe should provide a quieter and more comfortable ride.

What sort of tyres are you running? Or in USA speak... tires are you running?

It is louder than a hardtop car, yes, but compared to a Miata or an S2000 it's like a Cadillac.

It make some noise but for a convertible its damn quiet. A lot quieter than I expected it to be. I still would love to get a hardtop for mine though. I really like the look of the Bolt-on hardtop.

I've driven a lot of miles on both cars. Will it be your only car and your daily driver? Then get the Z4. Weekend car? The S2000.

Hey wiggie--

I think a lot of it depends on what you are used to driving. I drive ~60 total highway miles/day in my '04 back and forth to work, with the top up/down ratio being about 50/50. I can honestly say that I was really pleasantly surprised with how quiet the Z4 is, both with the top down as well as with it up.

Having said that, when my car was in the shop and I had an Infiniti M35 as a loaner, I was shocked at the silence...it was literally like a hush had fallen over the world . On the other hand, I was considering getting an Elise as my next car (before I knew I would be moving to Boston), and was in one not that long ago--even with the sound dampening package, wow...talk about noise! It made the Z4 sound like a mere whisper. So my guess is you will find that how noisy you perceive it to be will be somewhat relative.

As for the practical effects that the Z4's highway noise may have on you....yes, you will have to turn the radio up when the top is down. Yes, you may have trouble having a cell phone conversation in the car with the top down (especially if you don't have a wind blocker), and yes, you may have to speak a little louder to have a conversation with a passenger. But all in all, not a single one of those things bothers me in the least.

My z4 is no more noisier than my '85 Subaru. Now, maybe if I had another car from this century to compare to...

28 MPG on average with mixed driving. Up to 32 MPG on highway at 70 MPH.

Loud. Lots of tire noise. Top down normal conversation impossible on the highway. Love it. no need to talk anyway

Mileage: 28 City / 32 Highway

Noise Level: Quite acceptable, it's a roadster, not a high end Lexus, (thank God!)

Enjoyment Level: Superior
