1991 - 1999 (E36) (1991 - 1999) The first modern 3 Series, the E36, was the model that paved the way for the 3 Series to be named "Car of the Year" every year since the model was driving off showroom floors. Radically redesigned in 1992, the E36 was not the same 3 Series as the E21 and E30. Larger, less boxy in design, and equipped with a dual overhead cam engine, multilink rear suspension, and a more finished interior, the E36 balances sport with luxury.

Mmmmm....Straight Pipes

So i picked up an M3 exhaust the other night. In the process of taking of the old one i broke the bolts. So i had to take a trip to home depot for new ones....with no muffler. The sound was amazing at all rpms, especially 6k :drool . It was awesome, except for the lack of weight in the back. It handled like shit. My question is how can i get straight pipes and keep the weight there. i was thinking of gutting the resonators out of my 328 muffler and running pipes through it. would this work?

It shouldnt be a noticeable weight difference by any means.

It was pouring down rain all day. There was a huge difference. Could it have been extra power being made that casued me to lose traction more?

+1 yea it def shouldn't be that noticeable of a weight difference i think the cat back section weighs close to 45lbs, anyway you can probably take your stock exhaust to any exhaust shop and you should be able to buy dual pipes of a similar diameter and they can bend the pipes exactly and weld on flanges like the stock ones and depending on what you want the tips to look like they could weld those on or you can buy tips later and screw them on. this shouldn't cost much at all, prolly less than $100 however it will be way too loud IMO. anyway good luck

I didnt happen to have a camera with me at the time. Its loud, obnoxious and sexy. Not something i could deal with on a dd. Its a very unique sound to say the least. thanks for the advice on making mine guys.

Unless you're building a race car straight pipes will hurt performance on the street, and they sound obnoxious as well..

What mods aside from FI would benefit it?

+1 On hurting street performance.

Letting the car breathe better is one thing. Taking all backpressure away is like having your lungs inside out, outside of your body....yes you'll get more air, but will it really help at that point? haha, strange analogy i know.

How could you possibly like driving without an exhaust... Me and my friend took off my exhaust for fun to see how it would sound and the sound IS amazing but you get so much droning its not even funny..

LITERALLY within 5 minutes i had a headache that lasted the whole day.

+1 amazing it is.. but 5 minutes is more than enough of that kind of amazingness.

Running with open headers, btw, is very bad for scavenging and not good for rings or valves either..

talk about a headache the shop messed up my rear section of my exhaust so I took it off and I ran shorty headers and an active autowerkes track pipe from Minneapolis to Michigan it sounds badass but it was the worst 9 hours of my life around town driving isn't bad it sounds cool but so far from practical

There is no way that 45 pounds made THAT much of a difference. Sorry.

But yes, it does sound amazing. But if you do it, you'll start to hate driving your car pretty soon.

Had a 97' Firebird T-top, when the muffler blew out i removed it and sounded better than any other in town, not annoying either. But that was the only vehicle I have had that sounded better without a muffler than it did with one.

Catback does not weight 45 lbs. Probably closer to 20.
