| 1991 - 1999 (E36) (1991 - 1999) The first modern 3 Series, the E36, was the model that paved the way for the 3 Series to be named "Car of the Year" every year since the model was driving off showroom floors. Radically redesigned in 1992, the E36 was not the same 3 Series as the E21 and E30. Larger, less boxy in design, and equipped with a dual overhead cam engine, multilink rear suspension, and a more finished interior, the E36 balances sport with luxury. |

Key wouldn't go into ignition.
Today for absolutely no reason at all my key wouldn't go into the ignition cylinder. It seemed that the black plastic ramp-shaped thing in the front of the cylinder would not depress when I went to insert the key. Someone asked if they could try and I let them and somehow they got it in. I dont know what they did, and I doubt it was anything impressive because this person is an idiot in general.
It works normally now. Is this a common problem and should I expect this to happen again? The cylinder was replaced on this car less than a year ago due to the spinning problem. |

Wheel lock... when your key is out of the ignition and you turn your wheel to the left it LOCKS.
pull your wheel to the left a bit and then try to put your key in.

But wouldn't that just prevent me from turning the key once it's already inserted like most cars? Is this how the steering lock works on an E36? FWIW I did try turning the wheel, but it wasn't locked.
The moron that somehow got it to work is a guy I work with. He's usually drunk and saw I was having trouble and thought he needed to 'help'. In my mind I'm thinking 'OMG will he just go away!', but to placate him I gave him the key so he could see firsthand that the problem wasnt' that simple. When he got it in my jaw hit the ground. ![]() |
