| 1999 - 2005 (E46) (1999 - 2005) Starting in 1999 the E46 3 Series picked up where the E36 left off. Larger, with smoother lines, and with more advanced engines than its predecessor, the E46 easily held the title of "Best Car of the Year" throughout its life. |

funny bubbling noise
Well, it seems thermostat season has come around once more, going by the number of threads about engine temp/no heat.
My issue is that after riding with the heat on, when i turn the car off, it makes a weird bubbling noise that sounds like it's coming from the middle of the dash. Sometimes sounds like small fast moving bubbles, sometimes makes a kind of gurgling sound. What can this be? Thanks for any and all suggestions. I'm pretty sure I need/will be replacing my thermostat soon. Takes a very long time to get up to temp, if I dont have the heat on. With heat...forget it. (I commute 50 miles one way, and by the time I make it 30 miles, it's almost to the 12 o'clock position; with heat, hovers around the line above the blue) |

If there is air in the system, this could give false temp readings. So It's hard to say it is definitely a t-stat issue. I'd simply try topping it up and bleeding first. This is cheap and very easy to do.

I topped it up last week, but havent checked it since. Hoses, thermostat, and water pump replaced at about 120k, now at 193k | averaging close to 1k per week since I bought the car :-)
will check level when i get off work, before i go home |

Proper bleed instructions fyi
1. Open bleeder screw and coolant tank cap. 2. Turn on ignition. 3. Set heating controller to maximum temperature 4. Set fan to low setting. This opens the heating valves and starts the auxiliary water pump. 5. Perform filling operation slowly. 6. Pour coolant into coolant expansion tank up to max. cold fill level. 7. Close vent plug when bubble-free coolant emerges 8. Close coolant expansion tank. Vent cooling system and check for leaks. 9. If it works, have a beer/drink/glass of milk. |
